Unter allen Kulturen des Altertums ist die chinesische eine der ältesten und selbstständigsten. Von außen kaum beeinflusst, hat sie sich ungestört in ihrer Eigenart entwickeln können. Die chinesische Literatur umspannt einen Zeitraum von 4 Jahrtausenden. Aus der Ältesten Zeit (1100 bis ca. 500 v.Chr.) stammt das Hung-fan und das Yih-King. Ab 500 v.Chr. beginnt sich der Konfuzianismus zu entfalten. Zur gleichen Zeit (600-200 v.Chr.) wird die taoistische Lehre begründet. Erst ab dem 11. Jahrhundert entsteht der Neukonfuzianismus und die Sing-li- Philosophie. Das Hörbuch bietet hierbei einen ersten Einstieg in die chinesische Philosophie.
