Publisher's Summary

It was a desperate plan. But Mary Grace Winters knew the only way to save herself and her child from her abusive cop husband was to stage their own deaths. Now all that remains of their former life is at the bottom of a lake.

Armed with a new identity in a new town, she and her son have found refuge hundreds of miles away. As Caroline Stewart, she has almost forgotten the nightmare she left behind nine years ago. She is even taking a chance on love with Max Hunter, a man with wounds of his own. But her past is about to collide with the present when her husband uncovers her trail and threatens her hard-won peace. Step by step, he's closing in on her - and everything and everyone she loves.

Contains mature themes.

Horrible Narrator

I will never listen to another audiobook from this narrator. His voice characterisatons were juvenile, especially for women, which came off as condescending. It was like he was making fun of the women in this novel by overplaying them, so then rlthey came off looking weak and dumb. The story itself was just OK...but the characters were annoying because they were all full of self-pity. It was a frustrating listen.

All too real!

Loved it. Storyline was all too real. The characters came to life in what is sadly reality for far too many families. Delivered a true-to-life look at the devastation of lives impacted by domestic violence and struggles faced by the victims. Nothing better than a riveting mystery combined with a passionate love story. BRAVO

The narrator

The narrator was awful. Was he supposed to be British or American? Did anyone else catch the slip of bad accents? It made it hard to listen to. A woman would have done this justice.

Eh!

I loved this book in paperback and on my kindle. However, the man reading this book is horrible. No man should ever read Karen Rose books. Suggestion, 2 readers, woman and man, every time. The reader sounds like Jimmy Fallen when he impersonates a woman. Really bad!

HORRIBLE NARRATOR

Omg! I’m sorry doesn’t anyone in this industry of audible books actually listen to the narration before publishing? LoL this narrator is horrific! Are you British or American because I’m about 5 hours in (reluctantly but the story is good) and I still have no clue. I’m struggling. I want To listen to the rest but omg the narrator is absolutely killing this book and I’m not sure I’m going to make it to the end :(. Never again will I listen to a book with this guy reading it.

terrible narrator

I don't usually return a book. however, it was a struggle to hang in to the end with this narrator. I don't remember half the book, because of the distraction of having to see past the terrible narrator. he kind of adopted and lost a British accent of sorts a few times. there was no pause between sections of chapters making it hard to delineate between who was talking. overall disappointed.

Over 15 hours of sheer torture

Would you try another book from Karen Rose and/or Michael Ferraiuolo?

I love Karen Rose. This wasn’t her best, by any means, but it held my attention in such a way that I endured the narrator to get to the end.

I will never, under any circumstances, buy another book narrated by Michael Ferraiuolo! He vascillated between a British and American accent: aren’t these books directed? Why didn’t someone correct him? And the cheesy cartoon female voices...UGH! I wish the Audible samples held actual samples. Samples of narrative are not helpful. Samples of the voices some spend hours mangling would be better.

What did you like best about this story?

The storyline...abused wife of a cop manages to escape. For most of the book I liked Caroline, although she did have some TSTL moments, and her refusal to really trust the man she loved was a bit overdone. I truly liked Dana. She didn’t pull punches, or mollycoddle the people she helped rescue. The voice the narrator gave Dana was seriously unfortunate.

How could the performance have been better?

How could it get possibly get any worse? I don’t remember if there was a director on this book, but if there was....well, for shame!!!

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It held my attention throughout despite it being a little heavy on the romance. And actually, the emphasis on romance may have been exaggerated by the corny, grating, cartoonish, damsel-in distress voices used for the women.

Any additional comments?

Some of the situations were implausible, like a long-time police detective who is loved by his fellow officers who NEVER suspect that his accident-prone wife may be abused. No one, not even the doctors, ever reports the abuse. This guy threatens and murders everyone who crosses him, but no one sees through his lame disguises?

I love Michael Ferraiuolo!! Best Narrator!

Not a bad book and I don't kknow why there are negative reviews about Michael Ferraiuolo! He us one of the best male narrators by far!!! His female voice is better than most actual ladies voices. As for the book its good. Kept me enraptured!
