Publisher's Summary

Aram Raythe has the power to challenge the gods. He just doesn't know it yet.

Aram thinks he’s nothing but a misfit from a small fishing village in a dark corner of the world. As far as Aram knows, he has nothing, with hardly a possession to his name other than a desire to make friends and be accepted by those around him, which is something he’s never known. But Aram is more.

Much, much more.

Unknown to him, Aram bears within him a gift so old and rare that many people would kill him for it, and there are others who would twist him to use for their own sinister purposes. These magics are so potent that Aram earns a place at an academy for warrior mages training to earn for themselves the greatest place of honor among the armies of men: dragon riders.

Aram will have to fight for respect by becoming not just a dragon rider, but a Champion, the caliber of mage that hasn’t existed in the world for hundreds of years. And the land needs a Champion. Because when a dark god out of ancient myth arises to threaten the world of magic, it is Aram the world will turn to in its hour of need.

Best Epic Fantasy I've read in a long time!

Dragon Mage is a satisfying epic fantasy that masterfully weaves a coming of age tale of a young mage who will rise to challenge the great evils that threaten to destroy all that is good. There is heartbreak, triumph, romance, heroism and loss, all spun in a twisty tale that I never wanted to end. I like that the experiences and decisions of the characters' youth really their young adulthood.

The book is also quite long. That's a great thing for this genre, but especially since it flows so well. I loved that the book told a story with a proper beginning, middle, and end - although it leaves plenty of canvas for future work, it doesn't end in a cliffhanger, which is something that I really appreciate in a new author that I'm trying out, and especially if I dare read a book that appears to be in a series (Rievenworld, Book 1 - and there's already a title out for the second book).

As the title says, this, in fact, my favourite epic fantasy novel in a very long time. I liked it so much I immediately went on Amazon and bought the hardcover, which I'll ready as a non-audiobook, and then went on ML Spencer's kickstarter and bought the Collector's edition as well. Actually, my wife bought it for me as a present, but after all my accolades, she bought TWO collectors edition books, so that she could have one for herself.

Ben Farrow is a new narrator for me. I really, really like him - so much so that I'll look for other narrated works that he performs.

I highly recommend this audiobook!!!

Disconnected

I spent a lot of time deliberating over why this book never connected. And the best answer I came up with is, that the Author spends a lot of time telling me about characters relationships and who they think they are. While showing me the opposite constantly. Our two primary characters constantly refer to each other as best friends to themselves and each other. Then act like they barely know each other, which is accurate because they have never actually developed any more of a relationship than saying that they are best friends. I struggled to get through this one,

4.5/5 stars all around

This book was fantastic. Aram makes this whole story optimistic, endearing, and warm. Even though he himself is not necessarily always those things. He just makes those around him better (and the world too)! everyone deserves a friend like Markus as well.

I rated all three categories 5/5 but I would actually choose 4.5/5 for all three of them, if it were an option. There are certain story aspects that wrap up a *bit* too cleanly for my liking, although I understand that this was supposed to be stand alone when it was released. And the narration performance has one specific voice choice that I didn't care for, but overall quite well executed.

So entrenched in the story I couldn't get enough

The character development really pulls at the readers heartstrings. Spencer makes the insecurities of the main character relatable to struggles and tribulations that most of us experience growing into the best version of ourselves. Excellent moderation, dynamic and engaging storytelling. The moderator seamlessly moves between the different voices of the characters. The voices chosen by the moderator guided my imagination to create a mental picture of the characters throughout. the antagonist voice was particularly memorable and oozes with an privileged individual that finds success through a parasitic relationship living off the life force of others. I recommend this audio book to Fantasy loving fans everywhere.
