Legend. Myth. Nightfall has long been rumored to be nothing more than whispers on the breeze. If only it were so. In those halls of darkness, where children are taken from the world and given to shadow and dust, Asher is destined for that same fate. He will become the myth. He will become the legend. He will become the whisper of Death itself.

Infused with magic, shadows and starlight, the powerful godblades were believed to be lost nearly half a millennia ago, when the Godswar ended. Now, however, one has been found by the unlikeliest of wielders: Sampson Gaard, a blind but ambitious prince with something to prove. The only question is whether he controls the blade or the blade him. With an insidious evil lurking in the shadows, the answer may very well determine the fate of all Kingfall.

Aren has lived by the rules all his life. He's never questioned it; that's just the way things are. But then his father is executed for treason, and he and his best friend, Cade, are thrown into a prison mine, doomed to work until they drop. Unless they can somehow break free.... But what lies beyond the prison walls is more terrifying still. Rescued by a man who hates him yet is oath-bound to protect him, pursued by inhuman forces, Aren slowly accepts that everything he knew about his world was a lie.

Histoire
Mankind has lorded over the land of Illian for a thousand years, building on the ruins left by the elves, as if it were their birthright. A thousand years is a long time for an immortal race to see the truth of things, a truth that has remained unsaid for a millennium - elves are superior. They are faster, stronger, and connected to the magical realm in a way that man could never grasp. Illian should belong to them.

Histoire
Long ago, the world fell into twilight, when the great empires of old consumed each other in sorcerous cataclysms. In the south, the Star Towers fell, swallowed by the sea, while the black glaciers descended upon the northern holdfasts, entombing the cities of Min-Ceruth in ice and sorcery. Then from the ancient empire of Menekar, the paladins of Ama came, putting every surviving sorcerer to the sword and cleansing their taint from the land. The pulse of magic slowed, fading like the heartbeat of a dying man. But after a thousand years, it has begun to quicken again.

Description
An ancient evil. A treacherous king. A mystery going back to the fall of the gods.
In the heart of Vandar, as dark forces close in, Elyon, a gifted Bladeborn knight, fights for his family's survival in a world on the brink of war. In the beleaguered northlands of Tukor, a servant girl with a mysterious past is forced on the run by a treacherous lord, propelling her on a journey that will change her world forever. From the Shadowfort, an ancient power is unleashed, one that will set into motion a series of events that will bring the world to its knees.
With the world on the verge of chaos and countless lives at stake, a new First Blade must be selected, but obstacles stand in the way. Alliances are broken. Enemies are born. Only the strong will survive.
Follow this epic tale where the battle for land, power, and the divine gifts of the Fallen Gods will shape the fates of all.

Not That Original
It’s a pretty standard “we have these epic swords that make us like gods” story.
Nothing overly original with the character development and the author telegraphs a lot of the “twists and turns”.
That being said, if you haven’t read a ton of this genre then the book will hold up for you and most likely will get you to the second entry.
The narration is perfect. Steve Brand is fantastic and he did all the tower lord books and his voice is perfect for anything fantasy related!

A great story
A very good book tho it can be a bit slow at times. I enjoyed the world and factions seen so far and the backstory is pretty compelling. My favorite part are the characters, they are very well done with realistic personalities. All three main POV characters are interesting and fun to follow. They have agency, playing a role in the plot instead of just getting swept along the story making dumb choices to further the story. Getting the next book can't wait to see how the story unfolds as the author leaves many questions to be answered.

All around great
Story is great, but only 4/5 because it can be lengthy at time. Could have been a bit shorter in parts.
Narrator is great. 4/5 because there are better narrators on other titles. Occasionally people with southern accents sound the same.
Overall 4/5 worth a listen.

Wow, this was a chore.
Firstly, I give credit for professional & functional writing. (No severe grammar issues or jarring anachronisms. - You might think that doesn’t need to be applauded, but today, it does. — TLDR: This review will now declare that the book should be avoided because it is shockingly slow, the author violates show-not-tell with gusto, the endless world descriptions do not serve as a surrogate for innovative worldbuilding, the book does not even pretend to conclude or resolve a story… the narrator is sloppy with character names and… there are no dragons. (Yes. The cover was absolutely chosen to trick you.) — That said here are the crimes: 1) Knowing the difference between worldbuilding and world describing. This book is largely comprised of the latter. Endless descriptions of the world nobody called for, not in service to plot, and unnecessary, as they are definitively generic. Worldbuilding is the off-page work that serves the mechanics of the on-page world. Not this. 2) A close cousin to crime number one: Show Not Tell. — The sheer number of “conversations while walking” / “conversations while riding” / “conversations while fireside” that exist to TELL the reader what type of person a character is or what type of terrain a land has is disastrous. 3) The first plot event happens 5 chapters in. There are about 5 true plot events in about 60 chapters. Most chapters are just conversations. 4) The book does not resolve. It is essentially an intro… the events are set in motion, and this book ends. No bow. 5) The character names are dangerously similar to each other for audio… which many authors simply choose to avoid… in this case it puts an extra onus on the narrator to pronounce the names clearly and carefully… but… this narrator actually pronounces several of the names in completely different ways in later chapters from how he pronounced them in earlier chapters… all told it becomes a disastrous mess.
If you are a reader who has completed many of the truly great epic fantasy series you can tell from a mile away which authors this writer is extracting direct influence from… and I wish I hadn’t begun this particular journey because I actually read those authors. And it’s almost unreasonable to read them first and then transfer over to reading this.

Excellent
The narrator is excellent.
The story was engaging and the characters well developed.
It got a little bit slow in the middle, and at times it seemed like some characters’ actions were not consistent or plausible, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is a really enjoyable gritty fantasy.
I really like this book, I'm only halfway through so I can't speak on the entirety, but you know when an author has a writing style that you like and T.C. Edge definitely has my attention and I feel immersed in story.
The multiple plot lines are all interesting and as they start to merge together I really enjoy the different perspectives from opposing sides.
I would definitely recommend this book and for those who binge fantasy and are running out of material I would highly recommend it most definitely!

Blades that give God like powers!
First installment of the Bladeborn saga. Very good world building and character development. Story follows three main characters. Three generations of a family that currently holds one of the God inhanced blades. A shadow Assassin and a group of Knights who travel to the southern Kingdom who is their greatest enemy. Well worth a credit. Try it and you will not be sorry.
