About this listen
Then, some of the colonists noticed that the small, dragon-like lizards that inhabited their new world were joining the fight against Thread, breathing fire on it and teleporting to safety. If only, they thought, the dragonets were big enough for a human to ride and intelligent enough to work as a team with a rider...
And so they set their most talented geneticist to work to create the creatures Pern so desperately needed - Dragons!

Don’t let those negative comments sway you
I really enjoyed this book. It was entertaining, and really help me maintain a positive outlook about my life at this point in time. The character development doesn’t go too deep, but that allows you to fill in the blanks. I enjoy being able to sculpt the characters in my own mind. The story meanders through multiple challenges and successful solutions. In my mind Zai it was absolutely delicious to fall into a fantasy world literally a world away.
The performance was actually really good. The narrator did a wonderful job of giving life and voice to this book

The first domino in the line. So satisfying
Jumping into the Pern series was a joy. It had been recommended to me for years. I have been listening in publication order and have enjoyed all of the books thus far. The level of world building and complexity of plot Anne McCaffrey strings together is awe inspiring. The level of explanation that goes into how it all started just makes everything that much better. Fantastic read

Amazing Narration!! Great story.
I’ve always loved this story but hearing this guy read it was such a treat. He’s more of a voice actor than a narrator. So much emotion and very tone and it was a performance. It was art and I wish every audible narrator was as competent and talented as this one.
The first book of the Pern books was always one of my favourites because it starts out high-tech and scientific, and then turns into fantasy. Such a beautiful blend of sci-fi and fantasy. Well written well strategized highly recommended

it is fantastic to return to the land of Pern
I read this entire series probably twenty years ago now and it's rather fun to return to it in the audio version. it's a great story and the narrator did a good job

A Classic work of SF deserves a better narrator
I enjoyed Dick Hill’s reading of Thomas Pynchon’s against the day, where his wry, ironic tone suited the content perfectly. I have never enjoyed his reading of McCaffrey’s work. The series deserves a new edition with a better, arguably female narrator. His accents are caricatures, his pauses come at bizarre points mid-sentence, and his general tone makes earnest characters sound like they’re plotting something untoward. I love reading this book with my eyes. It’s been a chore reading it with my ears.
