Publisher's Summary

From a number one best-selling author: a fresh and funny romantic mystery series about a witty, down-to-earth heroine with a job you've never seen before....

Being an undercover poison taster for the rich and famous might sound glamorous, but for Isobel Avery it means stomaching bad clients and even worse coffee. The one side of the job that lives up to expectations is the money. Which is just as well for Izzy, since she needs an awful lot of it. Who knew when she made a lifelong commitment to a man that it would be one year living with him and the rest of her life paying for it?

But even her scoundrel ex-husband doesn't look so bad compared to her new client. He's competent, condescending, and annoyingly attractive, and Izzy doesn't know whether to sleep with him or poison him herself. Throw in a loan shark, a nosy neighbor, and a murder attempt, and Izzy will have her work cut out for her.

Perfect for fans of Camilla Chafer, Jana DeLeon, Janet Evanovich, Stephanie Bond, Julie Moffett, and JB Lynn.

Not a heroine I can get along with

I didn't like this story overall. The heroine and our POV character just isn't one I could enjoy being inside the head of.

She wasn't the first female heroine POV character I've read/listened to but the insecurities and self-doubt just ate at my possible enjoyment of the story so consistently that I really questioned how this character got up most mornings. In conversations with others about this sort of female character (not related to this book specifically) I understood that some readers can really identify with such a person. One who can't go past a mirror without thinking they are too fat or who looks at every male character and rates how quickly they would like to strip them.

To be fair on the last point when I have a male POV character who is doing that I also check out.

The book is 8 hours long, at least half the dialogue is inside the characters own head. If it became a movie without a voice over the story could be shown inside a tight 90 minute run time. Maybe a poorly edited 120. Very little plot happens, the clues to the mystery are there but some leaps have to be made to reach the final conclusion.

Others have rated this book much higher than I and the series seems to be quite popular. I just couldn't handle the character through whom the world was being presented.

Not going to go for a refund on the book as A) The quality of the performance wasn't bad and B) I wasn't the only one who listened to it, but it's my account so I get to leave the review.

Great fun!

This is an extremely well narrated package of fun. It's light, escapist, humorous, and a great start for C. Field. Can't wait to listen/read the second story... but after some serious lit.

Light hearted and clever

Good easy listening book, likable characters, original concept. Looking forward to listening to more in the series.

Unexpected Gem

I got this book on a whim a while ago and finally listened to it. I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't this. Fun, fast paced, and a completely different take on the mystery novel. Fantastic. I didn't want the book to end.
I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. There were some great laugh out loud moments, that caught me off guard at work, to the amusement of my co-workers.
I listen to many "first in a series" and don't continue with them. I WILL continue on with these.
The narrator was perfect and I'm happy to see that she reads the rest of the series.
