About this listen

Legendary science fiction author Orson Scott Card calls Brandon Sanderson a writer to watch.

Once the godlike rulers of the capital of Arelon, the inhabitans of Elantris have been imprisoned within themselves, unable to die after the city's magic failed years ago. But when a new prince falls victim to the curse, he refuses to accept his fate.

Slow beginng but worth it

I found it slow going in the beginning but have loved Brandon Sanderson's other books so I listened on. The last third of the book is worth the read. The characters took awhile to develop but are worth it in the long run. Narration was good overall.

This book was a pleasant surprise

Give this title a fair chance. The characters are deep, the story fulfilling and the end was perfect. The author's words painted beautiful pictures to bind the imagination to the story. At times, I thought the narrator wasn't a perfect fit, yet other times I could not imagine another. Very glad I used one credit for this title based on Orson Scott Card's acclaim for the writer.

Great book!

I am currently binging all of Brandon Sanderson’s books and this is definitely a weaker book than something like the storm light archives. That being said, comparing this book to other authors is what made it 5 stars!

Brandon Sanderson is an incredible writer and it shows even in his first book

Narrated by Zapp Brannigan

I enjoy brandons worlds and people very much. this was his earlier establishing work. it's no mistborn or stormlight but it's good. satisfying ending.

the narrator is great, except about halfway through he started to sound like Zapp Brannigan from Futurama and I couldn't stop hearing it.

an ok fantasy

This was an ok fantasy. Decent plot but overly long and somewhat meandering. Sanderson’s later books are better.

Good unique story

Typical Brandon Sanderson with many tragedy’s right up to the last minute before finally turning things around for a satisfying ending. Very original story, worth the listen. Excellent narration.

Engrossing story with strong characters

This is the first audio book I’ve listened to that I “couldn’t put down.” I found myself sitting in the car in the parking lot at work, trying to catch a few more minutes before heading in! Now that it’s over, I find myself thinking through the plot twists and wondering about the characters rather than moving on to another book right away.

The story is complete - no sequels or loose ends. The characters are interesting and complex. Like all of the best fantasy writers, the author uses a lot of concepts from religion and political studies - the interplay between the two, how each can be used to manipulate the other; how religion can provide comfort and hope or a system to understand one’s place in the world while also reinforcing class and subjugation. And it’s All wrapped up in an exciting tale of heroes and villains and fools, with many charterers being more than one of those things at different times as they develop and grow through the story.

I purchased this through a “daily deal” and plan to listen to it over again! Great stuff. I am now looking for another title from this author.

a must read (listen) for fantasy enthusiasts!

Brandon Sanderson is an absolutely brilliant world creator. I've read Elantris several times this being my first time listening to it, went in with apprehension. But I was NOT let down.
