Publisher's Summary
Imagine an America very similar to our own. It's got homework, best friends, and pistachio ice cream.
There are some differences. This America has been shaped dramatically by the magic, monsters, knowledge, and legends of its peoples, those Indigenous and those not. Some of these forces are charmingly everyday, like the ability to make an orb of light appear or travel across the world through rings of fungi. But other forces are less charming and should never see the light of day.
Elatsoe lives in this slightly stranger America. She can raise the ghosts of dead animals, a skill passed down through generations of her Lipan Apache family. Her beloved cousin has just been murdered in a town that wants no prying eyes. But she is going to do more than pry. The picture-perfect facade of Willowbee masks gruesome secrets, and she will rely on her wits, skills, and friends to tear off the mask and protect her family.
Darcie Little Badger is an extraordinary debut talent in the world of speculative fiction.
What the critics say
"[A] refreshing voice. Indigenous myths, modern-day technology, and the supernatural successfully blend to build a fast-paced murder mystery." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

The worst book I've listened to
Disclosure: I listened to about 2 hours of this book.
Firstly, this book has the worst voice actor of all the 200 books I listened to. Do a voices, do emotions, surprise, shock, anger, ANYTHING. Feels like some random girl off the street they asked to just read line by line with no distinction.
Secondly, the concept of the story is great, but the author fails horribly at making it engaging.. to top it off, it's often very confusing because she tries to introduce a whole new world and fails at explaining the concepts adequately... then there's time skip between Ellie and the grandmother which is so poorly transitioned that it actually adds even more confusion.
I've never returned a book on audible. This is a first. Hopefully for the author I'm the exception in my experience. Makes me wonder if she paid for the positive reviews.
