À propos de cet audio

In the grimly captivating sequel to Anathema, Maevyth and Zevander must navigate the perilous mortal lands to deliver Zevander from the clutches of an ancient, malevolent power that threatens to shatter both worlds.

An eldritch magic has awakened, turning the mortal world darker. Colder. Famished. With flesh-eating monsters and a sinister curse spreading like a plague, the last glimmer of humanity in Foxglove Parish has long since faded.

For Maevyth and Zevander, the only chance of escape is through The Eating Woods. But fate has woven a new web, tangling the threads of destiny, and crossing the mystical boundary to Aethyria might not be so simple.

As the bones of Maevyth's past are unearthed, and truths unravel with unsettling clarity, the possibility of never leaving Mortasia is becoming more of a reality. Unfortunately for Zevander, time is running out. The longer he stays in the mortal lands, deprived of essential vivicantem, the more he succumbs to the encroaching specter of madness.

Or maybe those chasing shadows are someone hunting him. A wretched evil closing in, threatening to pull him into the darkest corners of his mind.

Only, this time, Maevyth may not have the power to save him.

Eldritch is a full-length, gothic dark fantasy, and the second book in The Eating Woods trilogy. Perfect for listeners who enjoy a plot-heavy and atmospheric story with a unique magic system, a slow-burn romance, and a touch of horror.

I liked the characters and the world-building, but there were distracting pauses between the male narrator speaking and the female narrator saying, “he said,” that corpsed me out of the story. The two voices didn’t mesh together properly and it was jarring and irritating.

Poorly edited

Eldritch – Keri Lake
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 | 🌶️🌶️.5
Audiobook 🎧📚 - God Tier AMAZING Performance 10/10 would recommend.

I went into Eldritch knowing it leaned heavily on alternating flashbacks, which is usually something I struggle with, but Keri Lake made it work in a way I didn’t expect. Instead of feeling disruptive, Zevander’s past felt essential. Each return to it added weight to the present, gradually building a fuller understanding of who he is and why he carries so much of what he does. The timelines were intricately woven, and for the most part, I found myself fully pulled into both.

What stood out most to me in this installment was the writing itself. There’s a lyrical quality to Keri’s prose that creates vivid, almost tangible imagery, while still delivering emotional moments with precision. The relationship between Maevyth and Zevander felt especially well handled. It developed at a pace that felt natural and earned, and there was a depth to their connection that made their quieter moments just as impactful as the more intense ones. Zevander’s longing, in particular, lingered throughout the story in a way that was hard to ignore.

Keri continues to excel at writing villains. The General is one of those characters you genuinely love to hate, and I found myself increasingly invested in seeing how her arc will ultimately unfold. This book also balanced its reveals well. Some answers were satisfying, while others opened the door to new questions that kept me thinking even after I finished.

That said, there were moments where the pacing felt uneven. While many of the flashbacks were impactful, a few leaned into feeling excessive and slowed the progression of the main plot. At the same time, certain present-day moments felt rushed when they could have benefited from more space. I also found myself occasionally confused by aspects of the lore, character connections, and shifts between timelines. And while the side characters we did see were strong, I did miss some of the presence from book one. Aleysia’s role also continues to be something I haven’t fully settled on.

The emotional arcs, however, were deeply satisfying. Watching Zevander learn to accept love and Maevyth begin to challenge her own perceptions of herself added a layer of growth that made their journey feel meaningful. The spice felt appropriate for the story being told and the weight of Zevander’s past, though I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing that aspect pushed a bit further in the next book.

The ending left things in a place that feels deliberately painful. It’s the kind of cliffhanger that lingers, and so long as this is building toward a trilogy, I think book three has the potential to be the strongest of them all.

⚠️ Spoilers ⚠️

I did struggle with a few key moments. Zevander’s reveal of their mate status didn’t carry the emotional impact I was expecting, and Maevyth’s reaction to learning about Zevander’s role as her angel felt a little uncalled for and calloused. There’s also still some ambiguity around the extent of their blood bond from the end that I hope gets clarified.

I’m very much hoping we get a true bonding scene moving forward (perhaps during a Moon Cycle?!), along with a deeper exploration of their connection. And while I understand the restraint so far, I’d love to see the tension, both emotional and physical, pushed further.

The General has quickly become one of my most disliked villains - ever, and I’m especially anticipating the moment Zevander fully realizes what’s been done. That confrontation feels like it has the potential to be one of the most powerful moments in the series.

And finally, I’m more than ready to see the enchantments and curses begin to unravel and the spiders to cease to exist 🤢

So looking forward to book 3 💕

Came for Keri Lake, Stayed for James Cassidy

This man could narrate ANYTHING and I would listen to it. The story itself was okay, lots of trauma dumping but it doesn’t get too gratuitous. Cliffhanger ending!

James Cassidy’s voice…

I loved the first but not really sure how I feel about this one. Really long, lots of back and forth between past, present and various characters. And be prepared for a massive cliffhanger at the end.

Male narrator was brilliant.
