Story
D-Day is approaching. They don’t know where or when, but the Germans know it’ll be soon, and for Felicity "Flick" Clariet, the stakes have never been higher. A senior agent in the ranks of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) responsible for sabotage, Flick has survived to become one of Britain’s most effective operatives in Northern France. She knows that the Germans’ ability to thwart the Allied attack depends upon their lines of communications, and in the days before the invasion, no target is of greater strategic importance than the largest telephone exchange in Europe.

This is a fine novel but character development was a bit lacking. On the other hand, while the outcome of the story is never really in doubt, Follett managed to throw a few curveballs along the way. The narration was very good as well.

An audio page turner
Excellently written and narrated. Follett paints scenes with the skill of a Grand Master. There were times when I was awed by his descriptions. The pace was at times thrilling and the plot was well developed and unanticipated. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves spy novels. It is apply viewed as a classic. It does not disappoint.

All-time great thriller, great reader, great idea
What thriller rates higher than this classic from Ken Follett? It is beautifully written and wonderfully plotted, especially the last 100 pages. The only previous recording of the novel I am aware of is an old one by Brilliance audio, a multi-voice approach. I have that one, but it is rather routine compared to the nuanced, attentive work of Samuel West, who is absolutely excellent here--not an indifferently read sentence in the whole book! In particular, West's pacing is perfect. Penguin gave new voice to a handful of older Follett novels along with this classic. Audible should do likewise--look for some older titles that would similarly benefit from a face- or voicelift. Maybe the novels of Dick Francis or Rex Stout would experience a jump of popularity with new readings.

Overall enjoyable. One thing really irked me. The free world was at stake and they send in one Constable against a great spy and very adept killer. Sorry, that just way too much literary license and too distracting!
Follett has done some great work, but this isn’t one of them
