Publisher's Summary

A night he can't forget five years ago.

Nick Markovic found himself consumed by his quest for vengeance. The one time he managed to find peace was in the arms of Hayley Dalton. Being with her was like bathing in sunlight, and he ached to feel that again, but he couldn't. He gave his oath to Hayley's cousin Desiree, his partner at McKay-Taggart and Knight, that he'd never let his darkness infect Hayley's innocent world.

A spark she can’t put out.

It was years before that Hayley offered everything she had to Nick. After that one amazing night, all she wanted was to be his forever. Unfortunately, Nick's reaction was to walk away from her and never look back. The warm and caring man she'd discovered was gone, and after Des's death, he'd only grown colder. But when Hayley finds herself in mortal danger, she';s forced to seek protection from the man who broke her heart.

A flame that threatens to consume them both.

Haunted by the women he failed, Nick can't allow himself to grow close to Hayley again. Running to stay ahead of the powerful forces that endanger their lives, they travel from the lush Garden in London to the glittering lights of Rio. As the threat against her becomes clearer, he realizes that to keep her safe he must confront the demons from his past, even if it costs him a future with the woman he loves.

FAN..FREAKIN..TASTIC STORY.. PHENOMENAL NARRATION

This is only my second dip into the action-packed Masters and Mercenaries world and I have to ask myself why.. why.. why? because this is so intense, so thrilling, so captivating, so gripping, so passionate, so emotional, and so sizzling hot too. It’s a well-written, well thought out and well executed dual POV plot with great characters, mystery and sighworthy scenes that make you hold your breath. But the ABSOLUTE STAR of this story is ⭐️ Ryan West ⭐️ who seamlessly went from male to female, American, Russian, British, Scottish and Australian accents with total professional ease making each unfolding chapter intensely riveting as character after character, changing moods, quirks and feels, highs and lows and explosive chemistry was pulled out of the riveting non-stop action, angst and drama. Worth a credit? As I said, I’ve only dipped into this series once before, but from now on, I’m going to do what these spies do to their enemies.. and that’s eagerly pick them off one by one because I’m confident they’ll all be a fantastic listen. Yes, this audiobook would definitely be credit worthy.. however, they’re all now offered free under the Audible Escape Package.. and that, for me, is a fantastic win-win bargain.

Another winner!

I love this series so much and the narrator too! Ryan West does a great job bringing all the characters to life irregardless of gender or accent. The conversations that bounced around accents from Russian to Scottsh, Aussie, English and American were eargasmic!

🌻I like this series but......🌻

🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻V from Kansas🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻 There are a lot of things that I love about this series. It’s sexy, full of hot alpha males, full of strong heroines, has lots of Taggert-type humor and the good guys usually win. What I get tired of is the repeated theme, “I must keep you at arms link, for your own good; you deserve better!” This theme has really begun to irritate the crap out of me. Ms Blake, please come up with a new way to build angst! With that being said, I was glad to learn more about this quiet, brooding Russian. I was also glad that he finally found himself and finally really began to realize that he was a real member of the MT family!

DRAGS ON WAY TOO LONG. Narration is Great!

There are SO many things I like about this book and this series, but I can still only come up with a 3 star rating based on what I don't like. I always enjoy the narration. I think Ryan West does an awesome job. I love any appearance of Ian and Charlotte Taggert. This means it's always a good time. I love Ian and his sarcasm. I enjoy the friendship, loyalty, and support of the McKay - Taggert team in both the Dallas and London offices. I like the humor of the "Lost Boys". I love the way the female team members and some of the wives are portrayed. The introduction of kids into the team is also well done. I even enjoy the storylines of figuring out who the bad guys are, why they are the bad guys, and how the members of McKay - Taggert are going to take them down. There is always some action going on from the different Ops, as well as action going on in both Sanctum and the Garden. As you can see there is a LOT to enjoy about the individual book and the overall series. Focusing on Nic and Haley's story, I could not wait for it to be over. As far as I am concerned, there is one thing that is the major reason keeping these books from being 4 or 5 star reviews for me, and it is this. The couples, every single time, have to go back and forth about their relationship. "I want to be with you". "I'm not worthy of being with you". "I'm not sexy enough, interesting enough, honorable enough, normal enough, exciting enough, stable enough, etc." Basically, I am not enough. This comes from the man, the woman, or both. I could live with some insecurity that goes on for a bit. Something that a couple had to work out so they could move on, be together, have a life. The thing is that they go back and forth almost the entire book. Yes we are together. No, we can't be together. It is irritating AF. Let me not forget that Haley was just plain stupid. Why did she think she could protect seasoned operatives when this is what they do for a living? Why did she feel as a HISTORY PROFESSOR that she had a skill set where she could do anything, and SURVIVE hired killers? And, when she finally gained entrance to the Garden, she had the audacity to be judgey. I did not care for Haley. Haley was obsessed with comparing herself to Des. Nick was obsessed with feeling used by Des. Neither thought they were enough for the other. Everyone liked Des, but she was a crappy individual. Nic being part of the Bratva. Honestly, all of these things are fine in small doses, but when they are strung out over 14-16 hours of an audio book, it is just too much. hours of not being able to see the forest for the trees. Ugh! Even during an isolation mandate, I had to switch to something else and come back. If Nic and Haley separated one more time, I was done. Alas, I persevered and completed the book. For me, the amount of drama takes away from the sexiness and romance of the book. Yet, I am still hooked on the series. It is so smart of Lexi Blake to provide the teasers to the next book in the very last chapter. I have to know what happens with Brody and Stephanie. Then, I still have to get my Lost Boys fix in. Thank you for reading my rant.

Nick finally comes to terms with Desi’s death

In the continuing Masters and Mercenaries aftermath of the evil Hope McDonald saga this story revolved around Nick Maravich, the former Russian operative, and Haley Dalton, Desi’s “cousin” and a one time love interest of Nick’s. The story also incorporates the “Lost Boys” and sets the reader up for Aussie Brodie Carter’s story. There is plenty of involvement with both the London and Dallas characters especially Damion, Ian, and Charlotte, and we get more exposure to characters previously introduced but yet to have their own book like Kayla Summers and Ezra Fain. This book had a lot of action, a bit of the poor me and I don’t deserve her with Nick, and an occasional maybe I should give it all up attitude from Haley, but they both eventually develop backbones and Nick also gets a little smarter. The narration is good with Nick’s Russian accent, Brodie’s Aussie, several British, and the various American characters but again The narration would be greatly enhanced with a good female performance adding the richness of dual or even duet performance. The story is worth listening to especially for series fans and those with the Escape Package should definitely not miss this one.

I couldn't finish the book... sorry

I love Ryan West but not in this book. I didn't care for his accent in this book. I just couldn't get into the two main characters... I didn't understand their chemistry... I'm sorry. I quit.
