About this listen

The scowl should’ve been my first clue to stay far away from Anson Hunt. The sexy smirk and the fact that he’s my brother’s best friend? Reasons two and three. Not to mention, he’s the new contractor working on my house.

He’s everything I’m not: grumpy, rude, and more than a little attached to his solitude. It doesn’t matter how many times I try to kill him with kindness; the man simply won’t crack. Until he sees me shatter. Because when my world comes crashing down around me, Anson is the one catching me as I fall. And as so-called accidents start plaguing every part of my life, it’s Anson who steps in to keep me safe.

As he does, I can’t help but feel a flicker of heat. And it only takes a single moment for that spark to ignite into flames, engulfing us both. But Anson’s a man with secrets, and they have a price. When they’re revealed, neither of us will make it out unscathed…

Who doesn't love a perfect small town, grumpy/sunshine romance with MURDER?!

Rhodes and Anson are the perfect grumpy sunshine combination. Rho is sunshine personified, but also a force to be reckoned with. Catherine Cowles' characters always have pretty traumatic backstories, but Rhodes' and Anson's hit me so hard. I'm a sucker for a grumpy hero with a gooey soft heart, and Anson is the perfect mix of broody, thoughtful and sweet in his own gruff way. I love how hard he tries to resist Rho's sunshine all the while protecting and caring for her in every way he can. And we can't forget the big, raucous family that brings him into their loving chaos, however unwillingly!

As always, Catherine Cowles builds up the suspense spectacularly and the reveal for the evil lurking in the shadows in this book truly had my jaw dropping in shock! Catherine Cowles is quickly becoming my go-to auto-buy author!

A fabulous start to a new series!

Both the romance and suspense aspects of this book are fairly well written. I do think both aspects could be fleshed out a bit more. A bit more procedural with the mystery aspect and a bit more spice / relational with the romance aspect would have be a cherry on top of the well built 'sundae'. The fact that the heroine was written to be insightful and yet later written to be a bit nonsensical was disappointing. The contradictions in character development are too extreme and therefore distracting. The author wrote a side character as being empathic while also writing the the heroine with empathic tendencies. Considering the author's awareness, it would be better if the character development reflects the fact that an empathic personality does not coincide with a lack of common sense or intelligence. ....on the contrary. So, I think the book would be improved if this character development issue was resolved. I think there was a bit of a blip with the character development of the villain as well but I didn't find it as distracting. Overall, the narration is great and the book is worth the credit.

I absolutely loved this book! This is my first Catherine Cowles read and I immediately bought the next book in the series.
Excellent writing and character development. I loved how much humour the found family added to the suspenseful story. Cant wait to read more from this author!

The plot twist was quite a stretch beyond believability but I’m not sure that that is essential. The characters and writing took me away from a stressful life successfully. Couldn’t ask for more.

Entertaining and a compelling listen.
