Publisher's Summary

Caroline Overington's stunning fiction debut is a multi-voiced novel centred around a child's death and its terrible repercussions.

In 1982 Victorian police were called to a home on a housing estate an hour west of Melbourne. There, they found a five-year-old boy lying still and silent on the carpet. There were no obvious signs of trauma, but the child, Jacob, died the next day.

The story made the headlines, and hundreds attended the funeral. Few people were surprised when the boy's mother and her boyfriend went to prison for the crime. Police declared themselves satisfied with the result, saying there was no doubt that justice had been done.

And yet, for years rumours swept the estate and clung like cobwebs to the long-vacant house: there had been a cover-up. The real perpetrator, at least according to local gossip, was the boy's six-year-old sister, Lauren....

Twenty years on, Lauren has created a new life for herself, but details of Jacob's death begin to resurface and the story again makes the newspapers. As Lauren struggles with the ghosts of her childhood, it seems only a matter of time before the past catches up with her.

Not a bad story.

The writing in some areas just dragged on a bit. But overall it was a good listen.

Intrigue Character perspectives

Such a heartbreaking story of children surviving a family tragedy and their journey navigating the aftermath. The story told from the different perspectives of characters kept me riveted and made it such an interesting listen. It keeps you waiting until the end to learn the details of the tragedy as siblings come together after years apart to begin to come to terms and heal. Recommend this book!

Very satisfying!

This is my first experience with Caroline Overington's work, and I found it very satisfying. It's a sort of fictionalized true crime told almost like a podcast, with a cast of characters reporting different aspects of the crime as it evolves over the ensuing two decades. It wouldn't be nearly as effective without these two talented narrators bringing each of those different voices to life. At no point did I find the point-of-view confusing as each character is identified clearly as they speak about the part of the story that involves them, and the narrators change their voices subtly but effectively to suit each different character. I'm quite happy to recommend this audiobook.

Very good novel

Totally enjoyed this book. I had it in my library for some time and now wondering why I never got to it earlier.
Didn’t see the ending coming. Had a totally different perspective on “who done it!” Favoured this ending to what I thought.

Lots of character building to go no where

The book was okay. There was lots of unnecessary character building that was not needed. After the characters were well built and established they were never heard of again. Ending was alright but seemed as though the book ended out of no where. Narrations we’re great.

Not what I expected

I started this audiobook because it was labeled as suspense, mystery, thriller. I get the “mystery” - sort of, but definitely not thriller, and really not suspenseful. Interesting story, but should have been classified more as drama, tragedy, something along those lines- I kept waiting for something startling to happen. So mostly, I was disappointed. If I had been expecting what the content was, I may have enjoyed it more.
