Publisher's Summary

From two-million-selling author Joy Ellis comes one of the most keenly anticipated mysteries this year.

It arrives in the morning. An old-fashioned airmail envelope addressed to Detective Nikki Galena. Inside, on a single sheet of blue airmail paper, are three words: You failed me.

The second airmail envelope arrives at Nikki's home address. The same message. Only this time, it's followed by four names: Alexandra Cornfield, Ruth Baker, Bethany Lyons, Leanne Delaney.

Four missing women. Four local women whose bodies were never found.

The contents of the third letter, delivered by motorcycle courier, are even more disturbing.

The letter leads directly to the discovery of a body buried in a shallow grave out on the Fens. And Nikki and her partner Detective Joseph Easter are plunged into a baffling murder investigation.

Someone appears to be pursuing a personal vendetta against Nikki—and she has no idea who, or why. But one thing she does know: whoever it is is playing a very twisted game—and if Nikki and her team don't stop them, more deaths will follow.

The whole plot was awesome.

This was a very, very good book, and I am so sad that it is the last one in the series… I hope there will be more in the future… If so, I will be the first one to buy the new book.

Forced contrived fiction

Hard to finish such ridiculous events through out the chapters. Narration is dreadful too. My last joy Ellis novel. .

Loved it

Unfortunately I had read this while I was plagued with COVID. I guess in a sense, that was a good thing, as it took my mind off it. The book was well narrated with many twists and turns. Despite its excitement, I would fall asleep, and have to back track and find the spot I snoozed off at. I liked everything about the book. Still waiting to find out how the love story between Nikki and Joseph will pan out. Can’t wait for more books!!

Disappointing

I've been loyal to this author and this set of characters, but I think I need to stop with this series. The characters and plots are ridiculous and you can only suspend your disbelief so far. Once the author has Joseph planning surprise dinner parties for his lover/boss Nikki with her Octogenarian mom and friends making her father's recipes in his spare time as a Detective is laughable. Asking how his lover/boss is "feeling" every five minutes as a general concern and while attending a crime scene - please. She's basically castrated him. Gone is the wise but tough ex army guy, and replaced with some sort of disgruntled housewife's dream man. I stopped reading before she had the chance to have Joesph, bare-chested and glistening after cleaning her closets, present Nikki the album he scrapbooked for her of their life together with his wedding vision board as the final page. The crimes have become so far fetched I can't even care anymore. It's laziness on the author's part to create endlessly diabolical criminals, instead of believable every day ones. The pathologist who was once a bit campy but professional has become close to insulting and gross characature of a gay man as you can get. I tried twice to finish this book - and I almost always do - but it was just too annoying to continue. A real shame as this series used to be a favourite.
