Publisher's Summary

A subterranean power creates strange bedfellows for Jason and his friends in the epic next installment of He Who Fights with Monsters.

Following the devastating attack on Yaresh, its people are left to pick up the pieces.  The city lies in ruins, but its decimated defenders have more to deal with than just reconstruction. Jason's actions during the battle have brought unwelcome attention from allies and enemies alike. While the adventurers question his loyalty, the messengers question his very nature. Both have designs on Jason that he intends to thwart, but a danger comes to light that shifts everyone's agenda.

Deep underground, a hidden civilization has survived by tapping into a long-buried power. That power's growing instability has become both a threat and an opportunity to the warring surface factions. Neither side can stop or claim the power alone, leading to an uneasy alliance with a reluctant Jason at the center. The adventurers, messengers, and Jason himself all have intentions for the power but little idea what awaits them below ground. There are more players involved than any of them realize, and soon, they will have greater problems than each other.

again and again

how many times can you reiterate the same thing over and over in different ways. I feel like in the last few books there was a good 10 hours or more in each that could of just been cut. I just don't get it, you make a point then you move the story a bit then you make the same point with different words and then repeat this over and over

Just a whole bunch of rambling...

This author really needs to find an editor. This book was 90 percent filler with only 10 percent actual story progression. There's only so many ways we need to hear Jason is different. It is literally all this book is until the last hour or so. I can summarize Jason meets someone new, they treat him like silver rank. He gets upset, at the audacity of not worshiping him. He lectures about why he's different for about an hour or so. They realize he's different. They explain to Jason why he's different. Jason then tells his team and friends why he's different. Jason meets someone else and the cycle continues for the entire book. The last hour or so was the same honestly with a massive battle happening, which Jason still never really does anything other then talk to more people about why he's different. I really used to like this series, but it is honestly become so annoying lately. I think this is it for me. Also literally only 2 hours of story progression for it to end on a cliff hanger...

You can honestly skip book 10...

With the way it was written all he does is recap the past for the first HALF of the book as well having a high rank woman falling for him, again.

Don't get me wrong, the performance is great and I love the side characters but our main character Jason somehow is becoming more childish and it's starting to ruin the series for me.

SPOILERS:

First half of this book you keep getting told how special Jason is and have him talking about the past of the 3 he lost aka “his brother, his lover and his friend” to the new diamond rank love interest because he's all about trust and friendships when it comes to people he meets, specially the love interests that you can spot a mile away.

Yet somehow, he never thinks of his team/friends before doing his cruel jokes. The one that sticks out the most for me is the way he handles Sophie's mother Melody. Imagine his friend finally said she wanted you to help her mom and you hug her just to turn around and take this time to play your villain role as a joke because you just can’t help yourself. The man does it all by hanging Sophie’s mother above a pit full of lava and crocodiles and even starts to do his big speech. Sophie comes in and is RIGHTFULLY PISSED and all he says is sorry for it to never be brought up again? REALLY. Imagine if one of his friends mocked him for his family not trusting him? You’ll never hear the end of it and we’ll have 2 more books of him whining about how he was so hurt.

You also wouldn’t have much story progression if it wasn’t for Clive and the other characters because Jason honestly doesn’t do much but talk about how dark he is becoming, kill things and talk about how he doesn’t want to go too far or is making a joke you don’t get half the time from some old movie.

On top of all this, it ends on a cliffhanger and that doesn’t give you the feeling of excitement, it makes you feel like the series has no idea where it wants to go and the author is just buying time until he decides what next for Jason.

I hope book 11 is better but I got to say, Book 10 wasn’t worth the wait.

Worst book in the series by far

Worst book of the series and the last one for me. Half of the book goes on and on about how Jason is special and the other half is spent making Jason the most unlikable he's ever been. The story barely advanced in 20+ hours.

Gets better in the latter half

Thr first half of the book was Jason being his annoying self. He settles down, though, and accordingly the book gets better. Overall, though, it wasn't the greatest storyline, but it was good enough to finish the book.

A bit slow

This book feels like filler in the series. Not a lot of character growth or action till the last few chapters. Hoping the next book picks up the pace to make the slow pace of this book worth it.

Slow pacing, nothing happens until the last 20 chapters.

I am tired of having to hear the never ending pandoring about Jason's past and how special he is. We are 10 books into this now, a never ending back story is not needed from every character Jason has any interaction or potential interaction with.

The charactor building in this book added little. The world building was alright and the first 50 chapters added nothing. The book got good at the end and could have expanded on that more, as we only get basics of what most charactors are doing and the events going on.

Jason's minor adventures and never ending praising and suprise of his powers by others up until the main quest when they go underground could all have been covered in a novella, leaving room for a good story that finishes for the main book.

Not a strong book in this series.

Heath Miller

This review isn't just on the book... Bro... Heath... such an amazing job. My hats off to Heath Miller, Narrator. Never confusing with all the different characters, even when 5+ are having a conversation. I could go on. A++++.

The book is everything I wanted in book 10. like everyone else I wanted more, like always. I audibly laughed out loud and felt like tearing up at others. no lie. I love this series. I've listened to every book more than once and am about to start book 10 over again after finishing it 5 minutes ago.
