Publisher's Summary

The war has begun. Both sides demand Diem's allegiance—or her death.

After her disastrous coronation, Diem finds herself at the center of the conflict between the Descended and the Guardians. With her newfound friends and the man she's falling for on one side, and the mortals she has vowed to protect on the other, Diem must walk a careful line to save the people she loves…even from each other.

The mystery of her unusual heritage begins to unravel, sending Diem and Luther on an unexpected journey across the realms. The answers may hold the key to winning the war, but finding them will require her to face painful truths about her mother, her bloodline, and her fate.

Meanwhile, the Crowns have set Diem in their sights. Some could be her greatest allies—while others want her dead. To end their oppressive reign, Diem must sort friend from foe and risk it all to build an army of her own.

But a powerful figure in the north has plans that could change everything...

Heat of the Everflame is the third book in The Kindred's Curse Saga, a four-book epic fantasy romance series that follows our feisty, bad*ss heroine Diem Bellator in her fight against injustice, her struggle to survive in a royal palace full of betrayal and intrigue, and her journey of self-discovery and finding true love.

This slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers series is perfect for fans of unique magic systems, dragons and other mythical creatures, angst and romantic tension, and hilarious banter. This series will appeal to fans of plot-heavy, character-driven romantasy such as A Court of Thorns and Roses, Throne of Glass, Blood and Ash, The Plated Prisoner, Grisha, and Crowns of Nyaxia.

A let down of a third act

The first two books were 5 star reads for me. While the story has some very compelling moments and captivating plot lines... the slow burn has burnt out. I think Penn missed the exit on when this spark needed to ignite. There was more tension between these two in their first encounters than many mannny chapters later and now I just don't care. Luther would have killed anyone for touching her in the first book and now there are horrible people doing horrible things to her and he's just like in the background growling or whatever. We get it. She wants to save the mortals. She doesn't want to kill anyone. Idk I'm just bored.

A bit of a let down

Before I start, I want to say that it is a huge accomplishment to write a novel, and I know this is the authors piece of art. I have respect for anyone who can commit to writing not just one book but a series.

However, this was a bit of a let down - the main character showed zero growth just dithering about wanting to protect mortals at all cost, despite them doing questionable things, and self-betraying left, right, and center. The inclusion of her mother in the story was an annoying let down, and Luther lost all flavor - he became a bland, fawning idiot. The sexual chemistry was annoying - there is build up and then there is whatever this is, that once again, became annoying. How the story ends is one giant eye roll.

Had hoped the story would evolve but it seems stuck. Had hoped we’d see a female lead in a fantasy novel with more depth, and challenging the narrative that women aren’t just stupid, boy crazy, and inept at war… but that is basically a Cole’s notes of the character development.

The main character not making the right choice

Good book great story and world but wow did they have to make it like a sucky baby soup story half the time.
