Publisher's Summary

Jason Thorpe was content living a quiet life in New Orleans. He and his best friend, Ode, opened their cozy curios shop in the French Quarter, and he was making some new, albeit interesting, friends....

Then Jason met Varic Maedoc, the prince of the vampyrs, and his life changed forever.

Named the prince’s consort, Jason quickly became the most important subject in the vampyr realm, the man who holds the wolf of Maedoc’s heart - a position that comes with certain obligations and no small amount of influence. Theirs is a partnership of love and a lifetime commitment, but that bond is about to be tested when Varic must return to court and Jason accompanies him.

The king’s court in Malta is unlike anything Jason could have imagined. Amid the luxury and decadence of the palace is an air of danger and intrigue he is unprepared for, further complicated by new friends and allies who may not be what they seem. To stand beside and protect Varic, Jason must use every weapon in his arsenal to uncover a plot to usurp the king and reveal the identities of those who would see Jason dead before accepting him as their consort.

His single greatest asset is the love of his prince, but even that may not be enough to save Jason’s life.

Excellent sequel to His Consort!

Another amazing book by Mary Calmes.
In this sequel, Jason and Varic journey to court in Valletta and while Jason stumbles his way through court intrigue, he still manages to do the right thing. This earns him undying trust and friendship but not from everyone. Seen as a threat, he barely survives the attacks on his life until the final earthshattering climax where the truth is revealed. The HEA is very satisfying.

The narrator is the same from the first book and other than a couple of misspronounciations, does a very good job. I had no trouble telling who was speaking although some characters sounded a bit too alike.

Overall, a very good book and highly recommended.

Weird pauses in chapter 1 are fixed!

The pauses that plagued chapter 1 have been fixed, and it's now a smooth listen the whole book through! This one is a much more twisted world than the first book, and definitely darker, but it's so much more in depth with more plot and more action. At first, the politics are a bit difficult to follow, but I caught on pretty quick and I often find royal politics to be incredibly confusing in the real world, let alone in a fantasy world where I feel two steps behind. Courtly Politics did not overwhelm the book, even though 'court' is a pretty big part of the story. I will warn you though there are some very sad parts and some super intense parts, but the sweet parts and funny parts overshadow the them and the book leaves you with warm and fuzzies. Another wonderful story Mary Calmes! And the narration is fantastic now that everything has been fixed! Thank you very much for putting it on audible!

I'm so glad this book is on audio but

the issues with Chapter 1 are annoying! There are multiple places where the sound cuts out without reason. I noticed that the sound sort of gradually lowers to nothing in those parts but will abruptly return. Please fix those spots.

Perfection

I loved it and the ups and downs of their relationship made everything come to life as it gave a realness to the story. I will admit I role reverse would have been refreshing but nonetheless I loved each and every powerful moment between our two lovers.

Scott Smith expertly portrays the wonderful continuation of these to lovers. We get to see Varic's world from Jason's fresh point of view. Jason finds new friends while also facing peril everywhere. Love this adventure which flows so well from Scott Smith.

This is a Series You Won't Want to Leave !!!!

First let me start by saying that I have never really read any fiction in this genre, so I purchased His Consort with some trepidation. And holy hell, being pleasantly surprised is an understatement. I couldn't buy His Prince fast enough. I absolutely loved both books, and really hope there will be more. Scott R. Smith did such an amazing job narrating both books, that I've just purchased two more books he's reading, because we all know a narrator can make or break the listener's pleasure. He's a new go-to. Please, please Ms. Calmes I'd really like more adventures of Jason and Veric and all the characters which surround them.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed book 1 quite a bit. It was tightly woven and there were robust side characters. This concludes the story and it was harder to listen to. First, there were soooooo many characters to keep track of. Second, the events required understanding hundreds of years of court intrigue, most of which we learned through a character explaining it all (at various points in the story) to Jason. That, and some pretty serious bad guy monologuing.

There was plenty of action, too, and frankly, in glad it wasn't spread out over two more books told through a million flashbacks, although that might have been the better way to do things. Like I said, mixed feelings.

The narrator did a good job. If I listen to it again, I might try it a little sped up.
