Story
A night spent sleeping on dirt and leaves is not how Claire Matchett expected to spend her vacation. She thought this would be a break. A week of hiking and hot tubs with two other couple friends. Then Claire’s minivan breaks down on a lonely dirt road. With no cell reception, the group has no choice but to hike the rest of the way to their hotel. But it turns out the woods aren’t as easy to navigate as they thought. Hours later, they are lost. Hopelessly lost. And as they navigate deeper into the woods, the members of their party are struck down mysteriously one by one.

Publisher's Summary
The explosively addictive locked-room thriller from New York Times best seller Clare Mackintosh! A lot can happen in 20 hours when you're at 38,000 feet....
A claustrophobic thriller set over 20 hours on one airplane flight, with the heart-stopping tension of The Last Flight and the wrenching emotional intensity of Room, Hostage takes us on board the inaugural nonstop flight from London to Sydney.
Mina is trying to focus on her job as a flight attendant, not the problems of her five-year-old daughter back home or the fissures in her marriage. But the plane has barely taken off when Mina receives a chilling note from an anonymous passenger, someone intent on ensuring the plane never reaches its destination. Someone who needs Mina's assistance and who knows exactly how to make her comply. It's 20 hours to landing. A lot can happen in 20 hours....

Storyline
It took a couple of chapters to get into this story but it soon grabbed my attention. It took awhile to get used to the timeline jumping back and forth but once I got used to it, the tension built up excitingly.
Throughout the story, I had quite a bit of trouble with the narrator’s accent because I found she didn’t enunciate very clearly at times. For example, when Mina sounded like Nina or when Sophia sounded like Sofir.
I will look for more audibles by this author but not if narrated by this particular narrator.

Do Not Listen to This Book On the Plane
No, really. Just have a nice flight. I wouldn't even recommend this story to someone that was going to fly soon. It's a great beach listen, but only if you are driving to the beach.
The weakest part of this audiobook was the narrator. She didn't change the quality of her voice as characters changed, so it was hard to know who was speaking at times.
Overall, this was a fantastic, suspenseful book and I'm sure it will be a movie in the near future.

She's done it again!
I love all of Clare Mackintosh's books. This one, I have to admit, had me wondering if it was as good as her others. I bought the audiobook and it seemed so long with so much information with the characters and their individual stories. BUT...just when I thought the book was ending, she delivered not one, but two HUGE plot twists!! It was then that I realized why the other parts of the story (that I had originally thought were unnecessary) were so important. This is an excellent read!

Love Clare Mackintosh books and the narrator is perfect
The negative reviews about the narrator are unfair - I’ve listened to books with multiple narrators or narrators who try to do different voices for different characters and it can be very confusing. This is an adult book, the list of chapters tells the listener which character the chapter is about - the info is easy to find. If you don’t like the book, send it back to audible and get a refund of your credit - it’s not difficult.
I have listened to all Clare Mackintosh books and because of her own personal career and life experiences, her books are well researched, relevant and cleverly written. I love how her observations are always spot on. All her books are different and don’t have ridiculous story lines.
Loved this book. Enjoy!

11 POVs- 1 narrator that doesn’t change her voice/tone. Skip this audible.
This book is good, but the narration is maddening. There are ELEVEN viewpoints but only 1 narrator. That might be okay if the narrator’s voice dropped for the husband or changed tone for someone, but the book is narrated the same way for each person. I had to stop multiple times to check the title of the chapter I was on to see who it was. Really hope Clare Mackintosh can push her publisher to redo this audio and do her new book justice.

Needs multiple narrators!!
Her best book by far and a really fun and engaging thriller. I enjoyed the audiobook but had to keep checking the chapter titles to see what character was narrating. The narrator’s voice didn’t change at all from character to another so it was impossible for me to differentiate. This audiobook would have been perfect if they had used multiple narrators. This will make an awesome movie!
Falling vs. Hostage - similar books, both about planes being taken over and hostages taken, which is better? I didn’t finish Falling but couldn’t put Hostage down and finished in two days. Falling started out much better than Hostage but I lost interest about 3/4 of the way through.
Highly recommend this audiobook as is but hope they re-record it with multiple narrators.

I don't think I'd consider this a spoiler but...
I truly liked this book. I didn't zoom through like I do most books I read but listened carefully to try to catch motives, feelings and characters. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. I loved the characters and their flaws and that end twist just threw me for a loop. Had to listen twice to make sure I heard it correctly. Yep, I certainly did.

Should’ve been a full cast…
3.5 rounded up. 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 is a locked room thriller with tons of suspense. The first half of the book constitutes the first half of a 20 hr long flight, which is traveling from London to Sydney. All the characters are introduced and we’re set up in flight. The second half is where all the fun happens.
Ok so I had a couple of issues with this book. First, it’s a bit over-the-top. Second, I believe the producers for the audiobook made a huge mistake in going with one female narrator to voice so many different characters. The number of times I had to bookmark and then start the chapter over to remind me which character was speaking to me is ridiculous. She doesn’t affect her voice for male characters at all. Should’ve been a full cast. Super bummed about that so I had to mark this down a bit.
