Publisher's Summary
Forget hustle harder. Forget that 5 am wake-up. Forget outlining your life plan in six-month, one-year, and five-year spans. Collectively, the recent history we have lived through has forced a cultural shift, a reframing of our perspective around what work is for, what work/life balance really means, and how we want to spend our time on the planet. In her first book, Jenna Kutcher—entrepreneur, photographer, Instagram influencer, teacher, mom, and host of the wildly popular Goal Digger podcast—shares her philosophy on how to live a life that exists outside the tired cliché of “having it all”. How Are You, Really? is about taking a moment to soak up the richness of the experience and creating a life that allows for that.
When Jenna Kutcher was 22, she left her corporate job, bought a camera on Craigslist for $300, and started her own business as a wedding photographer. From that single investment in herself, she built a successful company, a thriving podcast, a brand. But her driving force is never about working harder/smarter/faster/better. What Jenna Kutcher embraces is the simple notion that we, women especially, crave lives of fulfillment, lives of enrichment. That comes from investing, first and most importantly in ourselves and in our dreams. How to make that investment successfully is what How Are You, Really? is about.
Divided into three sections, How Are You, Really? is a path to coming home to yourself, following what your intuition may have been quietly telling you to do for a long time, and the practical tools for how to make changes for the better.
In Part One: Who You Are, Jenna uses stories from her childhood, some career false starts, her marriage and path to motherhood, and more to show how to crystallize your sense of your own identity. Because how can you know what you really, truly want out of your life if you don’t see yourself clearly?
In Part Two: Who You Have, and Who Has You, Jenna shows the benefit of building a support system, how mentorship and kindness can come in surprising ways and from surprising sources, and how by giving yourself in this way to others, you grow.
In Part Three: What You’re Going to Do About It, Jenna guides you through illustrations from her career on how to turn your dearest and deepest wish, your goal, into a life that brings success, joy, and—most importantly—the time to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
We all want, simply put, a life of enrichment.
So, ask yourself the question you’ve been avoiding.
How are you, really?
It’s time to find your answer, and start living.
This is how you get there.

Good listen overall
I liked this book overall; it was good to hear the author’s story, and her journey so far in her life. I appreciated the journal prompts at the end of each chapter. I found this book was more for entertainment, rather than hard, tangible practises to bring into your own life. But overall I really liked the book, especially the raw honesty.

Jenna asks the question “How Are You, Really?” throughout the book and if you really ask yourself those questions you will find that you have had some internal growth throughout the book. I got teary eyed and laughed at times and will forever ask myself that same question. Thank you Jenna.

I cannot be the only negative review...
This book was heavily marketed as "never before heard stories" yet if you're an avid podcast listener like I was, I've heard just about every single story shared in the book. In general, the content was very light and not a lot of truly tangible and actionable advice like other self help books have. Every chapter ended with "go to my website for more." I'd rather the author actually TELL ME more in the book, the book that I paid for. The general repetitive theme of the book was "I tried something new and was amazing at it! Everything worked out for me so you should try!" Overall, as a podcast listener for years, I was immensely disappointed not only in the book, but just in general her entire brand has left a bad taste in my mouth after reading this book. This is the first review I've ever given of a book if that tells you anything.

Out of Touch
I downloaded this book to listen to for some inspiration. However, it was so out of touch, I could hardly keep up with the amount of instances I had to just put it down and take a break. My impression of Jenna is that she is a goal-setter, hard worker, and determined to chase her goals, but her particular story is not relatable to most people's reality which made the book really tough for me to digest. Here are just a few examples:
1. She buys a used camera and becomes the most highly rated wedding photographer in her state for several years running
2. She has the painting skill of an earthworm (her words) but practices a few minutes a day and builds an Etsy store with her artwork that makes her solid passive income in her sleep
3. She wants to shift career direction, so she "quickly" works hard to pay off her loans
4. She has a vision of living elsewhere, so within a few weeks, she and her husband have sold their house and moved back closer to family.
5. She wants to focus on her career and happens to be married to a man who is happy to stay at home with the kids so she can pursue her goals.
How many small businesses fail? How many people invest years of effort into developing a craft only to just eek by on income? How many people must negotiate with a spouse because both feel their jobs are important but someone may have to yield if they have small children? How many people are unable to find a buyer for their house, cannot afford a larger space, or cannot move because their spouse is tethered to a job they can't just walk away from for any number of reasons? How many people must take decades to pay off student loans that were necessary costs to develop their skills for the future career?
At one point in the book, while talking about cribbage, she said something to the tune of "How lucky that we have a partner by our sides, cheering us on on the same side of the cribbage board". There seemed to be an underlying assumption in this book that most readers are young and lacking barriers or partnered . For myself, an early 40's single mom who has spent years paying off student loans from both undergrad and grad school, and establishing myself in my career, I found this book profoundly out of touch. I am unable to just pivot because I need salaried work for for stability; I have small children, one with special needs; I am tethered to my expensive city so the kids can see their dad, but I do not have the benefit of family close by or an involved enough co-parent to provide meaningful support; I fundamentally lack time and financial resources, and a whole mountain of other fairly normal life circumstances. And I know lots of parents in my shoes. perhaps i am just not in her target audience.
The underlying message of this book was that if you ask yourself how you are and you are not thrilled with your current life path, you should re-evaluate how you can shift your trajectory. I agree that it's never too late to reconsider goals and aspirations. However, the story implied that if you are honest enough and want a change badly enough, you will find a way, which is simply not as straightforward as she suggests.

bummed
For me Jenna was very hard to listen to. Her sharp tone had me feeling like she was trying too hard to get me to believe what she was saying. By chapter 4 I was wanting her to get to the point. I did not listen until the end. This one just wasn't for me.

Buy it for Yourself & Buy it for Your Friends!
I can’t even begin to sing ENOUGH praises for this book! I felt like Jenna must have waltzed around inside my OWN mind for months in writing it. I’ve read a LOT of personal development books and I can confidently say this is one of (if not) THE best I’ve ever read. I loved it so much I immediately bought ten hard copies to hand out to friends (and - even though I’ve never been the *book club* type, I’ve even entertained the idea of gathering some gal-pals to start a book club on this one!) — because every woman needs this book and many men will ALSO find value from Jenna’s wisdom (even though it’s mostly directed at women.) I like having a hard copy for reference to the end-of-chapter journaling prompts (which are also available for download), and I LOVE listening to it on Audible (I preferred 1.2x speed, which felt a little more of a natural pace to listen and still absorb the content) because hearing the author tell it in her own voice was powerful & captivating. Thank you, Jenna, for stepping into your destiny and thus empowering others to step into theirs. That’s what I’d call a legacy worth leaving!

Keeping It Real
If you love all the messiness of raw, real, vulnerable, powerful and thought provoking conversation, Jenna is the voice you want speaking in your head while simultaneously melting your heart. I highly suggest listening to the audiobook as Jenna's tone, love, compassion, connection and brilliance feel so much more profound when hearing her tell her story out loud.
Society teaches us to run fast, far and not look back. It is time to stop running, dive deep within and feel into How are you really. Jenna is a true influencer in allowing the space for you to remember, reconnect and feel truthfully whatever it is you are moving through.

One of the best books I have listened to
Jenna is a great speaker and her perspective is real life. She is not scared to tell it all. Be expected to get emotional at times with her story especially if you are an emotional person or have struggled with loss. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for their purpose.

THANK YOU JENNA!!!
I needed your book more than I ever knew!! I just finished the audio book and my head is spinning with ideas and thoughts. I am a successful entrepreneur who has pushed myself too hard for the last 30 years. I made sure no one went without what they needed from me but at the price of my physical and mental health. I am ready to make the change. Thank you for all your thoughts and wisdom!

Same song different chorus
Not sure what I was expecting but I think I’ve read this same book with only slightly varied themes at least 8 times in the last two years.

Not for everyone
If you’re not an entrepreneur or don’t want to be, then this book isn’t for you. It wasn’t relevant for ME.
