Publisher's Summary

Based on the highly acclaimed NPR podcast How I Built This with Guy Raz, this book offers priceless insights and inspiration from the world's top entrepreneurs on how to start, launch, and build a successful venture.

Great ideas often come from a simple spark: A soccer player on the New Zealand national team notices all the unused wool his country produces and figures out a way to turn them into shoes (Allbirds). A former Buddhist monk decides the very best way to spread his mindfulness teachings is by launching an app (Headspace). A sandwich cart vendor finds a way to reuse leftover pita bread and turns it into a multimillion-dollar business (Stacy’s Pita Chips).

Award-winning journalist and NPR host Guy Raz has interviewed more than 200 highly successful entrepreneurs to uncover amazing true stories like these. In How I Built This, he shares tips for every entrepreneur's journey: from the early days of formulating your idea, to raising money and recruiting employees, to fending off competitors, to finally paying yourself a real salary. This is a must-listen for anyone who has ever dreamed of starting their own business or wondered how trailblazing entrepreneurs made their own dreams a reality.

Really Great Book and Structure

Kudos to Guy on this one. The structure is such that it's a thoroughly enjoyably listen without feeling overwhelmed by information or too lengthy a narrative. By breaking it down into shorter 20-25 minute chapters (each mostly focusing on a small handful of businesses) and pulling from that singular lessons is very digestible. Picked some great stories and definitely provided a greater context in the delivery of it all, which is why I give it straight 5's. There really is a lot to pull from this regardless of the level you're operating on.

Yikes--Opposite of Inspiring

The way this book is advertised you would think it was about people who started from the bottom and worked their way to the top. After listening to account after account of people living rent free with their parents, receiving money from their family (because we all have parents that can give us $50,000 right)? working in prestigious careers, etc. etc. I was completely done. If you grew up in a loving, middle class family then NO, you did not start from the bottom and I'm sick of people claiming this.

Inspiring and informative

I heard about this book through the podcast of the same name.
I would reccommend this book to any inspiring entrepreneur. The examples of many problems encountered by well known successful large and small enterprises are laid out well organized chapters.

GET THIS BOOK!

Guy Raz has given us a pure gem. The way he has collected stories, principles, and the steps of entrepreneurship and shared them with us is masterful. As a writer myself, I often can’t help but critique how things are written or how I might’ve put it differently. Instead, here, I found myself sitting back marveling at his perfect word choice. It’s the most exquisite blend of compassion and truth-telling, maybe ever, by an author. I’ll no doubt be listening again!

Fantastic!

A 30,000 foot look at the stories and journeys we’ve all come to love from How I Built This. Guy’s incredible storytelling ability shines through the pairing of founders and company tales that span time and location, calling out the overarching challenges they (and we) all face.

A great read!

Inspiring and thoughtful

Like his podcast by the same name, but condensed and more thematic. Guy pulls out lessons and themes he’s learned from the founders he’s interviewed and peppers in how one life journey as well.

Certainly one of my favorite books I’ve listened to.

Great book for aspiring entrepreneurs

I loved every minute of this. I’ve heard some of these business’s stories before, but Guy Raz managed to uncover aspects that feel more real and put their founding into a much more relatable perspective. He seems to ask the right questions and really gain the trust of the founders he interviews. I’m left feeling like a really can start the business I want to start!

excellent stories

An excellent telling if intriguing and interesting stories. This is my luck to be introduced to the podcast, then get a opportunity to listen to the audiobook.
Guy tells of products and people that are familiar, probably items or services you use daily. Learning how these things came to exist is fascinating. Definitely for people considering starting a business.
