Publisher's Summary

"Narrator January LaVoy brings a richly layered performance to a story.... She expertly handles the large cast of multigenerational characters" —AudioFile on Hideaway

The #1 New York Times-bestselling author's terrifying new thriller about one man's ice-cold malice, and one woman's fight to reclaim her life.

Former Army brat Morgan Albright has finally planted roots in a friendly neighborhood near Baltimore. Her friend and roommate Nina helps her make the mortgage payments, as does Morgan's job as a bartender. But after she and Nina host their first dinner party—attended by Luke, the flirtatious IT guy who'd been chatting her up at the bar—her carefully built world is shattered. The back door glass is broken, cash and jewelry are missing, her car is gone, and Nina lies dead on the floor.

Soon, a horrific truth emerges: It was Morgan who let the monster in. "Luke" is actually a cold-hearted con artist named Gavin who targets a particular type of woman, steals her assets and identity, and then commits his ultimate goal: murder.

What the FBI tells Morgan is beyond chilling. Nina wasn't his type. Morgan is. Nina was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. And Morgan's nightmare is just beginning. Soon she has no choice but to flee to her mother's home in Vermont. While she struggles to build something new, she meets another man, Miles Jameson. He isn't flashy or flirtatious, and his family business has deep roots in town. But Gavin is still out there hunting new victims, and he hasn't forgotten the one who got away.

Classic Roberts

A cautionary tale… the charmed life of a murderous psychopath unravels when his targeted victim alludes him.
Morgan, refuses to remain his victim. She, along with her family and friends, hold on to what’s important - love and freedom … until they can escape his shadow for good.

Identity by Nora Roberts

An interesting and nail biting story about a psychopathic serial killer. Hard to put down. Another must read for any woman reminding others to be careful about safety.

Performance was great - story was ..

January LaVoy is amazing & I love when she reads NR.

This was a better story than the last few that NR did (life long reader and own almost everything she's ever written). Liked the love story a lot, especially the pacing - and the villain had some more depth than "just a bad guy" that we've seen in the last few years.

Disappointed in the fat phobic themes.

Miss the days the side characters were flushed out and felt real instead of obvious plot devices.

Did I listen to the same book??

Did I listen to the same story as all of the raving “edge of my seat” reviewers?? The only thing on edge for me was my finger hovering over the stop and delete button in my audible app.

Started off strong, suspenseful with the psychopath targeting the main character and had me hooked. And then it flips to a corny drawn out piece that seemed to promote the trade of bartending, glamorizing it as if Morgan is the Steve Jobs of bartenders. As if a lavender margarita is cutting edge. All of the characters seemed to be blown away by Morgan’s “brilliance” and ability to carry on conversations with strangers while bartending and making sure to ID her customers before serving. The dialogue of “the ladies” ( the extremely irritating reference to her mother and grandmother) every time Morgan whips up dinner or paints furniture legs is written as if they are praising a 5 yr for her finger paintings hanging on the refrigerator. News flash…Morgan is not some sort of genius. She does stupid things like not freezing her accounts tue first time her identity was stolen and buying a hybrid car when she broke believing this is more cost effective than buying a gas run vehicle. Does she know how many years it will actually take her to recoup the initial costs and start saving her money?? Especially when she plans on only driving in the winter?? Typical idiotic liberal agenda plugs made by wealthy and out of touch authors.

Don’t get me started on the proclaimed “romance”. I get the fact that Miles is good looking but his personality sucks. He’s consistently short, rude and distant with Morgan but after she manages to finally work a 3 min convo with him (I mean, that IS her forte, right?) she’s in love with the asshole who conveniently and suddenly flips his switch. I felt they were jumping into bed out of nowhere without any chemistry or lead up.

Meanwhile, the only interesting character in the story is hardly visited. And even he was poorly executed. Why would you have a psychopath referring to “guilt” as if it were something he would be at all familiar with?

LaVoy gets 👍👍 as always and was the only redeeming feature of this book.

Pretty Solid Story

I am glad this story was paired with January LaVoy for narration. She does such a great job of bringing characters to life. Enjoyed this stand alone novel - mystery, romance with a bit of thriller and police procedural mixed in. I hope Roberts revisits this family. Would love to read more.

Delightful and Romantic

I loved this story; it felt modern and old-fashioned at the same time. The romance was very sweet but I particularly liked the way the main character grew throughout the story
