Publisher's Summary

"Narrator January LaVoy brings a richly layered performance to a story.... She expertly handles the large cast of multigenerational characters" —AudioFile on Hideaway

The #1 New York Times-bestselling author's terrifying new thriller about one man's ice-cold malice, and one woman's fight to reclaim her life.

Former Army brat Morgan Albright has finally planted roots in a friendly neighborhood near Baltimore. Her friend and roommate Nina helps her make the mortgage payments, as does Morgan's job as a bartender. But after she and Nina host their first dinner party—attended by Luke, the flirtatious IT guy who'd been chatting her up at the bar—her carefully built world is shattered. The back door glass is broken, cash and jewelry are missing, her car is gone, and Nina lies dead on the floor.

Soon, a horrific truth emerges: It was Morgan who let the monster in. "Luke" is actually a cold-hearted con artist named Gavin who targets a particular type of woman, steals her assets and identity, and then commits his ultimate goal: murder.

What the FBI tells Morgan is beyond chilling. Nina wasn't his type. Morgan is. Nina was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. And Morgan's nightmare is just beginning. Soon she has no choice but to flee to her mother's home in Vermont. While she struggles to build something new, she meets another man, Miles Jameson. He isn't flashy or flirtatious, and his family business has deep roots in town. But Gavin is still out there hunting new victims, and he hasn't forgotten the one who got away.

If you like romantic cliches

Story was 4 hrs too long. Maybe I’m just over Nora Robert’s books. All too much of the same. Started out with a good fast moving premise but then I couldn’t wait for it to end. Predictable and quite cheesy.

Very relatable main character that you can't help but root for.

A compelling story that pulls at your heart strings, makes you laugh and you can't wait for what happens next.

Eloquently written

This book had me from the beginning to the end. It kept the readers interest, and the characters and the way it was narrated was excellent.

Overall—just not my fave!

So…two things. 1) the narrator delivered her lines in either a testy/perpetually irritated voice, or in the *funeral director* voice. For me, it just didn’t make me want to really settle in to the story.
2) The plot. It…was…long. And mostly because of superfluous scenes that lasted forever & didn’t seem to pertain to either a) moving the plot along, or b) growing the character, or c) just because it was interesting. Picture a scene where a character goes to the mailbox. If it followed the overall storytelling style of this book, it would read as follows. “I stepped out of my front door. Then took a step forward. Then another. And another. My fourth step was not straight, but to the left. Then I took another step forward.” It would take an hour to reach the mailbox, okay? *That* is what it felt like, listening to this book. It’s like the author wanted to write a romantic suspense, but 90% of it was just plain boring, & the other 10% was so blandly romantic that it didn’t make the cut for me. Furthermore—if the book is going to be quite slow…at least could it be an emotionally satisfying read?

But, if you are okay with a more meandering, detail heavy plot vs. a plot that flows a bit faster, you may enjoy this book.

Held my interest

Not too predictable. Held my attention. A very nice escape with some thriller built in.

Suspenseful

While the story was very interesting at times it seemed to drag. Well read but the narrator sounded like an innocent young child.

Loved the Story except for one nagging irritation

Miles. Ugh. I loved the story, the narration and everything about it. I became quickly immersed in the whole thing. Except for Miles. I didn’t find anything romantic about this character. I found him moody and controlling. Maybe that kind of personality fits nicely in fiction but in real life; run! He is NOT a man you want to marry. ‘Just sayin

An Overall Winner

I enjoyed this novel by Nora Roberts. The storyline was excellent, it kept me from wanting to put it down when I needed to. A thriller, a love story, a bit of mystery, so much wrapped in an exciting package. I enjoyed listening to it through Audible and for the most part, the narration was very well done. A couple of the voices in my mind did not seem to fit the characters but that is just my one opinion and it definitely would not change my thumbs up recommendation. This is a must read or like I did, a listen, for those who enjoy suspense, thrillers, hint of mystery along with a beautiful love story. I am so glad I downloaded this novel, thank you Nora Roberts.
