Story
The first story Selma Blair Beitner ever heard about herself is that she was a mean, mean baby. With her mouth pulled in a perpetual snarl and a head so furry it had to be rubbed to make way for her forehead, Selma spent years living up to her terrible reputation: biting her sisters, lying spontaneously, getting drunk from Passover wine at the age of seven, and behaving dramatically so that she would be the center of attention. In a memoir that is as wildly funny as it is emotionally shattering, Blair tells the captivating story of growing up and finding her truth.

Yearbook is a collection of true stories that I desperately hope are just funny at worst, and life-changingly amazing at best. (I understand that it’s likely the former, which is a fancy “book” way of saying “the first one.”) I talk about my grandparents, doing stand-up comedy as a teenager, bar mitzvahs, and Jewish summer camp, and tell way more stories about doing drugs than my mother would like.

Publisher's Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
#1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER
A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life.
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.
In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants.
Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

A must read
I am genuinely at a loss of words. This book is so important and needed to be made. I couldn’t stop listening I needed to listen to it all in one day. As someone who grew up in an abusive household I related so much to the experiences and feelings shared. It’s such a powerful book needed to be heard by everyone. No matter someone’s fame, privilege etc. there can be abuse, deep pain and trauma someone is dealing with behind curtains. This book lights passion in me and reminds me how important it is to share your traumas with the world in hopes that the more conversations we have about this the more change will happen. Thank you Jennette. Sincerely thank you.

Essential
I’d like to think everyone has complicated relationships with their parents, because that would mean I’m not alone. But I see friends who have these relationships with their mothers that seem straight out of a movie or sitcom and I envy them and wonder if I’m the weird one.
And then this beautiful memoir came into my life and I suddenly feel more seen and heard than I ever have before.
Thank you, Jennette, for this incredibly brave, beautiful, and vulnerable gift.

unnecessary sex scenes just for attention, adds nothing to the book, book sucked, I'd guess she ran out of money and couldn't find any acting gigs so figured writing about some dude blasting into her mouth would sell a few copies.

Unexpectedly poor narration
The book is good and I highly recommend it to anyone. It’s among the best memoirs I have read- and it really doesn’t feel right when a memoir is not read by the author. However, while I love Jennette McCurdy’s voice, she often mumbles and speaks rapidly as if she’s rushing through this book. There were times I could not understand her, and I don’t want to slow a book down. If she had just slowed it down a bit and spoken more clearly, the narration could have been excellent.
I honestly want to keep this book but I am finding myself reading along with the ebook so I don’t miss what she’s saying. I’m only a few chapters in so if I continue to find I can’t make out her mumbling I might be unable to finish and will have to stick with only the ebook or a hard copy. Hopefully it gets better- and again, I really do love Jennette.

Everything I thought it would be and more
I knew that this book would discuss the childhood acting industry and Jennette’s mom, but there was so much more to this book.
It truly does an amazing job breaking down the emotions and thought processes of a little girl who grew up in an abusive environment that she thought was normal. A person who she loved and admired she later learned never had her best interest in mind. There are so many people this book will help and that will be able to relate to even one part of Jennette McCurdy’s story.
I can’t recommend reading this book enough! And I’m beyond happy that the audio version is read by Jennette herself!

intense, painful, but cathartic
this is the first time I’ve ever pre-ordered on audible, because I was just so impatient for this to be released. I knew some of the details of it beforehand, I’ve pretty much watched/listened to all the podcasts from Jennette, either her own or the ones she’s guested on, but the book was what I was really impatient for.
For me, the best part was that she was the one reading it. Given the subject matter, I’d have understood if she had chosen not to, but I hope maybe it was a bit cathartic for her to be the one reading and getting it out.
I relate a bit too much to some of the key issues she discusses, and I’m working through them myself. Reading this book was painful for that reason.
I finished the audiobook in one night. Afterwards, the next morning, I called my sister and we had a crazy long conversation about our parents and childhood, and it was probably the best painful thing I’ve ever done.
this audiobook is great for so many reasons, but it also helps to feel closer to the real hidden stories of someone we pretty much grew up alongside. knowing she had similar struggles as my siblings and myself, and that she felt just as isolated, especially in the spotlight, is sad, yes.. but it builds a weird sense of “shared trauma” for me that makes me feel a bit less alone.
that said, a lot of this book is definitely very intense, so make sure you are mentally safe and prepared to read.
especially if you have any issues with some of the things she talks about. maybe plan some self care for afterwards. get some hot tea, listen to relaxing music, that sort of thing.
I don’t regret getting this book, and will probably at some point listen again when I’m ready, as one of the best things that’s helped me is hearing from others who have gone through similar things. admittedly, I haven’t done much acting, but I related about the writing parts and growing up constantly trying to read/predict the volatility of people around me.
so thank you for sharing this with us, Jennette.

To Jeanette McCurdy
I have loved iCarly ever since it came out. I have also enjoyed the character of Sam. However, I don't think about meeting my favorite actresses or actors. I'm not obsessed with their personal lives or feel the need to follow them around.
For me I'm okay with watching them on the screen and following their careers as far as what movies and shows they are in. That is as far invested in them as I get.
I am also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints. I somewhat can relate to the feelings that she had with her mom and wanting to please her. As well as her mom not being healthy and that having a great impact on her. My story is not the same but some of my feelings are.
I want to apologize to Jeanette McCurdy. I did see you as Sam and not as who you really are. Thank you for sharing your story. Thank you for sharing your truth. Your reminder to us (your fans and anyone else reading your book) that you are a person who deserves to grow up and become who you want to be is a truth that needed to be told.
Congratulations making great progress with your life. I'm rooting for you. 🎉🥰
You are an amazing writer!!! I loved your narration of your book.

amazing!!
absolutely amazingly written and performed. Jennette's sense of humor and voice are very strong and her ability to act really enhanced the listening experience. her story was truly heartbreaking and there were several times I physically recoiled at the things her mother and "the creator" did to her. the ending was inspiring and hopeful and the final chapter is a fantastic conclusion to this memoir. hope to see more writing from Jennette!!

Not bad, but not what I expected
This one is hard to listen to if you have any experience with abuse but never gets too deep into that.
Performance: I expected the performance to have a bit more emotion to it, as often books like this read by the author have a bit more life to them. However, this was quite flat throughout.
Book: Throughout the years, Jennette has been very open about her life and the issues she had with her mother. For the most part, that is all this book is, so I was a bit shocked that outside of a small mention at the beginning little is said about her accounts or earnings. For someone like myself that has heard the sound bites but not much else I wish that would have been addressed.
Additionally, the wrap up at the end felt devoid of an answer on how she has gone from doing ANYTHING to appease her overbearing mother to being happy she passed. Is this not the title? Yes, we know what she did but the work to break her hold is really never touched on. This could have been a story of how it happened, the mourning of a loss, and the realization of what crap luck has befallen Jennette but how she has grown. Instead, it is a disjointed stream of this horrible event to that horrible event and not much else.
Maybe the work to deal with this is in book 2? I guess we'll see.

Loved
I’ve never listened to an audio book- or even picked up a book in a good while, but as someone with mommy issues this was a must. Thank you for sharing your story, I haven’t felt this much validation in awhile. All the love

Powerful, vulnerable, and authentic. Happy for her
Jennette has earned this raw and real story from her side. Arrest Dan Snyder.

Bored
I couldn't get through the last 2 hours (!!) of this book.
No emotion and she reads (and writes) her every unemotional thought.
Sorry I used credit on this one.

Beyond my expectation
This was a wonderful surprise !!! What a fantastic book. I listened to it without stopping the first day. And I have listened to it two more Times since! The story is globally rather sad but Jenette tells it with such humour. She comes out as a very mature and smart woman.

Wow. Not the same experience but the same experience
Thank you for writing this. Your experience helps me feel seen, understood and to validate my own.
It’s crazy to think how much of the same applies to my past even without the child actor part or the crazy physical abuse. Abuse can be so sneaky and people so awful. Worst even under the disguise of the parent victim that a child learns to “protect” and instead of living we get stolen from our freedom to be. A must read.-

Perfect
I cant say anything bad about this book it was terribly funny and sad at the same time
I went through a whole broken childhood to a normal woman finally able to enjoy life
I struggle with anorexia and this is a motivation to change
Nobody is doomed there is always a tomorrow
