INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Heart-wrenchingly personal…dizzying.” —Rolling Stone

From eldest daughter Shari Franke, the shocking true story behind the viral 8 Passengers family vlog—now the subject of a new Hulu docuseries—and the hidden abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother, and how, in the face of unimaginable pain, she found freedom and healing.

Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel 8 Passengers, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined.

As the family’s YouTube notoriety grew, so too did Ruby’s delusions of righteousness. Fueled by the sadistic influence of relationship coach Jodi Hildebrandt, together they implemented an inhumane and merciless disciplinary regime.

Ruby and Jodi were arrested in Utah in 2023 on multiple charges of aggravated child abuse. On that fateful day, Shari shared a photo online of a police car outside their home. Her caption had one word: “Finally.”

For the first time, Shari will reveal the disturbing truth behind 8 Passengers and her family’s devastating involvement with Jodi Hildebrandt’s cultish life coaching program, “ConneXions.” No stone is left unturned as Shari exposes the perils of influencer culture and shares for the first time her battle for truth and survival in the face of her mother’s cruelty.©2025 Shari Franke (P)2025 Simon & Schuster Audio

It was a beautifully written book that brought many emotions while listening to and as someone who has difficulty with reading and focusing, I finished the book within a few days of listening.

Written with such strength, taking her power back and beginning to see her own worth. Shari's book is fantastically written and the audio book brings so much more life to the words. Whether you find yourself in similar situations as she was in, or in complete different ones - her words and thoughts hold so much healing in them.

Growing up in an abusive household I always noticed similar signs from the eight passengers YouTube channel with behaviours my mother exhibited but I never expected how vicious the truth truly was. Ruby Franke deserves a worse prison sentence with no possibility of parole, emotional abuse should be taken much more seriously in our society’s today. Narcissism and manipulation are aspects of our society that are very hard to spot, and once you do you realize how deep a person’s words can truly affect your mental health over time. Growing up in a violent and narcissistic household cal lead you to thinking certain behaviours are normal which can lead to dangerous and traumatic experiences.

Shari’s story is brave and inspirational and should motivate us all to break the cycle and let the abuse end with us. We’re all prone to manipulation no matter our age when we grow up believing we are less deserving of certain affections due to our environmental situation. Religion is easy to manipulate, weather it’s how we interpret it or how others interpret it, and the story of 8 passengers is just another story of how far religious extremism goes and how it affects us mentally. Shari took all the values ruby misunderstood and manipulated and found the truth in her religion to prove that love doesn’t mean violence.

“Realizing your mother was incapable of truly seeing you, of loving you for who you are, rather than an extension of herself is a bitter pill to swallow.” As someone with a mother who has NPD I relate a lot to Shari, and I connected a lot to this story, which is why I was so interested in the case. I feel absolutely horrible for all six of those children for the abuse that they had to suffer under that horrible woman. Children do not deserve to be loved with condition only. I have my own personal feelings on family vlogging and children being on YouTube, but if we can learn anything in the eight passengers case it’s that we can never trust what we are seeing on the Internet, and that we should always question content we are consuming.

Sometimes are mothers are our first monsters

Was unfamiliar with story. Found it hard to stop listening as I usually only listen when commuting. I needed to slow the author’s voice to 0.9 to make her rate pleasant but it is hard to knock someone telling their own story as part of their healing journey. I wish the family wellness and healing. I hope the author isn’t done as it sounds like there is still religious harm to work through and accountability to be won.

Finished quickly
