Agli occhi di un inglese benestante e ricco di sensibilità e di immaginazione l'Italia fece un'impressione straordinaria.
Da una parte le bellezze naturali e le opere d'arte, dall'altra la miseria, la rovina, e la sporcizia in cui era ridotto il paese dopo le ripetute invasioni e spoliazioni. E, nella conclusione, Dickens spera che gli italiani possano col tempo acquisire una coscienza nazionale. Vengono descritte Genova, Verona, Roma, Pisa, Firenze, Napoli, e Venezia, descritta come un sogno, tanto erano increduli e abbacinati i suoi occhi.
