Publisher's Summary

Don't miss this "impossible to put down" (Buzzfeed) novel with deadly stakes, thrilling twists, and juicy secrets - perfect for fans of One of Us Is Lying and Knives Out.

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: Survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why - or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch - and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: Dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions.

Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a con-woman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: A twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

Be warned: You won’t stop until you’ve gone through all of the books!

This mystery book made me question so many things and the biggest question was how can one start be so captivating that I could binge the whole series in a single week?

The characters are deep and equally flawed in a way that shows the human side to the rich and famous. The plot builds at a wonderful pace and even when you think you know what’s going on, you don’t. And that is probably a huge part of why I haven’t been able to put my headphones down.

The narrator did a magnificent job capturing tones, personalities and unique vocal patterns in the individual characters, making it easy to know who is talking.

The pacing was perfect.

The only thing I disliked was the hen the story ended but I immediately bought the second story

Knives Out Fans Will Love It

I finally decided to give this one a try, since I’ve seen it everywhere. While it wasn’t what I expected, I did enjoy it and can see why it’s so hyped. The story is fun, charming, clever, and fast paced.

Avery is an easy to relate to main character who finds herself tangled in a complicated situation where she inherits billions of dollars from an unknown man, and is forced to contend with his tumultuous family. Though I found her to be a bit of a Mary Sue at times, I enjoyed the moments where she reflected on her vulnerabilities and the consequences of inheriting so much wealth.

All of the Hawthorne boys have distinct and charismatic personalities. They are the centre of the story and I loved reading about them and their secrets.

The story also splits between the consequences of a normal girl becoming one of the richest people on the planet, and the secrets ad puzzles in Hawthorne house. While I did appreciate the realism in this setting and the drama that came with it, I wanted a bit more of the puzzles and danger.

That said, this is a really fun book with complicated characters, ,emotion, and excitement. Perfect for anyone looking to dive into a mystery over the weekend

Good read, not sure if I’d continue

I think this was a good read but not great. Narrator made it easy to listen to, was a little slow at some points. Don’t think I liked it enough to continue onto the next books. Was pretty mediocre in my opinion.

Great Start

Overall I though it was a great concept for the book just a bit predictable in the end, I was missing the shock factor in the surprise reveal.
Hope that the next book dives deeper in the protagonist's past more and develops the side characters more.

The narration is awful

I own this actual book but was on a long drive and decided to listen to it on my drive. The narration was so bad I couldn't listen to it. This women ruined the book. She read it like it was for five year olds. The voices she made for all the brothers were awful and don't even get me started on the voice she does for their mom. 🤢🤢🤢🤢 Please! someone else anyone else re read this awesome book. Such a great book and she killed it. Savagely.
