About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Mira Grant, author of the renowned Newsflesh series, returns with a novel that takes us to a new world of ancient mysteries and mythological dangers come to life.

The ocean is home to many myths,

But some are deadly....

Seven years ago the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a mockumentary bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a tragedy.

Now a new crew has been assembled. But this time they're not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life's work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart, this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will be found only below the waves.

But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

One of my new favourite horror books. INTO THE DROWNING DEEP is tense, thrilling, smart, unique, and a bloody good time. It is a perfect blend of horror and the supernatural, with a believable cast of characters and some truly terrifying creature designs. I was hooked from beginning to end.

The story follows a research team as they sail to the Mariana Trench in search of mermaids. On arriving, the team swiftly learns that these creatures are more dangerous than they could possibly have been prepared for.

There is a large cast with many characters, each of whom have different personalities to remain distinct, and I felt that they were given the right amount of depth. Not everyone was given an abundance of page time, but everyone felt like a real person. And the slower beginning allowed me to connect with the cast and care about them.

I loved the blend of science, ASL, and research. I love books that entertain as well as educate. The prose and plot were solid enough that nothing felt out of place or overbearing. There were a few moments near the end that could have been tightened or expanded on, but I was so entertained and tense that I still enjoyed every moment. Mira Grant was inventive in her plot, making it impossible to predict anything that would happen.

If you're a fan of the Alien movies and horror stories set in the ocean, this book is perfect for you. It's exciting, has high stakes, a good cast, and is incredibly smart. One of my favourite books of the year, and one of my favorite horror novels!

great draw at the beginning...lost my attention a bit in the middle. mostly just all the science talk but picked up again at the end. i enjoyed it. just wish it had more of a climax at the end.

okay!!!

it was an appealing theme but the switching POVs took me out of it a little. Some characters were a bit two dimensional, like the 2 hunters and the ex boyfriend. Some others were more interesting like Theo and Tory. Also it seemed like it ended right on the climax, after they had that big discovery about the female creature it jumped right into the epilogue, no resolution and follow up with the main survivors.

Interesting premise, execution lacks depth

This was pretty long and I stuck with it to see if it would get more interesting or surprise me in any way but it did not. I found the biology of the sirens interesting, especially the organisms growing in their hair. That’s about it.

Long and not very exciting

pros:
• beautifully written and researched
• very bingeable (couldn’t stop listening)
• some compelling characters
cons:
• suffering from the “main characters are unkillable” disease (how many near deaths can there be before there’s no tension anymore because you just know that only the minor characters die?)
• Very kitsch and cliché ending
• [mild spoilers] if you’ve played Dragon Age: Origins and know the Broodmother, the ending “twist” of the book is going to be very familiar to you.

**about the narrator** loved her voice, the way she read was incredible, but PLEASE, NEVER ATTEMPT AN AUSTRALIAN OR A FRENCH CANADIAN ACCENT EVER AGAIN. Glad they were minor characters ‘cause the fake accent was so goddamn awful. I, myself, am french canadian and I was wondering if she thought we were russians with that accent. Big yikes.

Really interesting take on real life mermaids. If you like the TV show Sirens, you're gonna like this.

Very good!

Brilliant, thrilling tale of human survival and curiosity. With a perfect balance of hope, loss and true connection between characters I found it extremely hard to stop reading

Absolutely Incredible

Wow. Not only was this a solid, inclusive, Bechdel Test excelling horror story but the plot is a great motivation to:

a.) Exercise regularly

b.) Learn a sign language

I appreciated the dedication to the science as well.

Solid horror

Worth every minute! It’s so tough to find a good story these days! You won’t regret this one.

Amazing

I finished this in 2 days but I was tired of it after 6 hours, for many reasons. The cosplay news reporter was just one of many, many annoying characters.

None of these characters are likeable.
