Publisher's Summary

A Great War is coming, and it will engulf the Imperium of Man. The Space Marines of the Alpha Legion, the last and most secretive of all the Astartes brotherhoods, arrive on a heathen world to support the Imperial Army in a pacification campaign against strange and uncanny forces. But what drives the Alpha Legion? Can they be trusted, and what side will they choose when the Great War begins? Loyalties are put to the test, and the cunning schemes of an alien intelligence revealed, as the fate of mankind hangs in the balance.

The story was ok but hard to follow and didn't leave me feeling attached to any of the characters except one.

it really only picks up bear the end.

I'm Alpharius! We are all Alpharius!

#Audible1 The Alpha Legion. A legion that works in the shadow. Of all the legions in the WH 40K saga, this is the least known of all the legions to me. Renowned for their infiltration tactics, this book tells the story of their way of waging war. Throughout the entire audiobook, I never knew what was happening and why until the author Dan Abnett tips his hand. There is no doubt that the Alpha Legion is moving the characters through this story to their own ends. I found the book to be somewhat monotonous in details at times and could not get invested in the characters. While it was well written, my personal tastes did not find this book as pleasing as others written by Dan Abnett.

The Twist at the end though...

Bit slow at some points... BUT that twist... so worth it! Awesome! Cant wait to listen to the next book!

Starts up to be slow, but ended with a bang.

The first 2/3s of the story was meh... but the last part is awesome. The plot twists at the end made the story... but sad to say the rest of the book was slow and uneventful. Gave 4 stars as the ending was STILL that good. It’s a must read but I would give warning about the slow start of the story.

loved to read it, loved to hear it

This particular entry in the horus heresy series apart from the first 4 books of the beginning of this series had me enthralled from the very first chapter! It took a few books to get me to be interested in other legions like the Imperial Fists or Death Guard but only one book for me to instantly spark my interest in the Alpha Legion, THIS book. The story itself was a fresh take, the reader was easy to follow and the 11+ hours it took to listen to this audiobook seemed almost to go by faster than the previous books! That's not to say it was a bad thing or a short book, no that's just a realization that this book had my interest from the very start. My favorite book thus far by Dan Abnett.

A truly intriguing story

The alpha legion nothing is as it seem. Are the Alpha legion and their primarchs truly traitors have they really turned their back on mankind or were they trying to prevent a greater evil. Is it possible that the most secretive and trickiest legion in the imperium of man had themselves been duped find out in legion secrets and lies.

welcome to the CIA of the astarties.

The book was awesome and followed a large cast of characters in an almost seeming pulp fiction style that all ties together and the ways you would not expect. 10 out of 10 would read again.

Amazing!

I've never been an Alpha Legion fan so I wasn't excited to read this one. But once I started I didn't want to stop. I loved the whole ride. Honestly one of the best of the series.

great narration, story didn't really vibe with me

characters I wasn't very interested in, there's some interesting intrigue but you spend a lot of the book kind of confused. also the alpha legion hardly is present most the time

Another great Dan Abnett book

The book is necessarily cryptic, but maybe a bit too much at times. i found myself wondering why certain factions were seemingly missing at key points and there didn't seem to be enough explanation other than they were busy with espionage. Otherwise, it was a typically great story by Dan Abnett, my favorite Warhammer author and performed fairly well. The performer is clear but volume did vary a bit.
