Publisher's Summary

Detective Inspector John Rebus is not a man easily intimidated, so when political heavyweights start to lean on the dour, moralistic Edinburgh detective to stop an investigation, Rebus doggedly digs in and follows the case as it moves from embezzlement to murder and finally to conspiracy at the highest level of government.

Diasappointing

Found I had some dislike for the Rebus character. Disappointing finish on a un-engaging plot.

Very disappointed in the Audible version

I like Ian Rankin, but really dislike Samuel Gillies as a narrator (for the Rebus novels anyway). He uses an exaggerated plummy voice, and all the characters, from police, to criminals, to government officials, sound like country gentlemen from the 1940s. It was hard to keep the characters straight when they all sounded the same. Nevertheless, I slogged through this novel (I'm listening to the Rebus books in order), but the very last chapter is missing! I am so annoyed that I wasted my time on this. I should have just bought the book and read it myself. I'm surprised that Audible has such poor quality control
