Michael Lewis turns the inquiry on its head to create a fresh, character-driven narrative brimming with indignation and dark humor, a fitting sequel to his number-one best-selling Liar’s Poker.

Story
The tsunami of cheap credit that rolled across the planet between 2002 and 2008 was more than a simple financial phenomenon: it was temptation, offering entire societies the chance to reveal aspects of their characters they could not normally afford to indulge. The Greeks wanted to turn their country into a pinata stuffed with cash and allow as many citizens as possible to take a whack at it. The Germans wanted to be even more German; the Irish wanted to stop being Irish.

A masterful account of today's money culture, showing how the underpricing of risk leads to catastrophe. For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Roger Lowenstein, the bestselling author of Buffett, captures Long-Term's roller-coaster ride in gripping detail. Drawing on confidential internal memos and interviews with dozens of key players, Lowenstein crafts a story that reads like a first-rate thriller from beginning to end. He explains not just how the fund made and lost its money, but what it was about the personalities of Long-Term's partners, the arrogance of their mathematical certainties, and the late-nineties culture of Wall Street that made it all possible.

Throughout history, rich and poor countries alike have been lending, borrowing, crashing - and recovering -their way through an extraordinary range of financial crises. Each time, the experts have chimed, "this time is different" - claiming that the old rules of valuation no longer apply and that the new situation bears little similarity to past disasters. This book proves that premise wrong.

Forty years ago Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky wrote a series of breathtakingly original studies undoing our assumptions about the decision-making process. Their papers showed the ways in which the human mind erred systematically when forced to make judgments about uncertain situations. Their work created the field of behavioral economics, revolutionized Big Data studies, advanced evidence-based medicine, led to a new approach to government regulation, and made Michael Lewis' work possible.

Story
The 1980s was the most outrageous and turbulent era in the financial market since the crash of ’29, not only on Wall Street but around the world. Michael Lewis, as a trainee at Salomon Brothers in New York and as an investment banker and later financial journalist, was uniquely positioned to chronicle the ambition and folly that fueled the decade. In these trenchant, often hilarious true tales we meet the colorful movers and shakers who commanded the headlines and rewrote the rules.
Written by: Michael Lewis
Publisher's Summary
The classic Michael Lewis book that defined an era of greed, gluttony, and outrageous fortune, available for the first time unabridged and read by the author.
In 1986, before Michael Lewis became the best-selling author of The Big Short, Moneyball, and Flash Boys, he landed a job at Salomon Brothers, one of Wall Street’s premier investment firms.
During the next three years, Lewis rose from callow trainee to New York- and London-based bond salesman, raking in millions for the firm and cashing in on a modern-day gold rush. Liar’s Poker is the culmination of those heady, frenzied years - a behind-the-scenes look at a unique and turbulent time in American business. This new audio edition, produced by the same team that produces his number one podcast Against the Rules, is unabridged, read by the author, and features archival news clips from the era, original scoring and sound effects, as well as a bonus episode from the companion podcast.
From the frat-boy camaraderie of the 41st-floor trading room to the killer instinct that made ambitious young men gamble everything on a high-stakes game of bluffing and deception, Liar’s Poker is both “the funniest book on Wall Street I’ve ever read” (Tom Wolfe) and the launchpad for Michael Lewis’ storied career.

Finally!
As an avid Michael Lewis fan and someone who works in the industry I have been waiting a long time for a proper audiobook version of Liar’s Poker. The older recording was abridged and not read particularly well. This version is the full book and Lewis reads it himself with great energy and inflection. Liar’s Poker is a story that lends itself very well to an audiobook so if you’re into the book and enjoy audiobooks I can wholeheartedly recommend this title! Thank you to Michael Lewis and company for bringing this to Audible!

Been waiting 10 years for this!
I “read” the original abridged version of Liar’s Poker over 10 years ago and was surprised to discover after the fact that it was an abridged version. Even that version felt complete and well told. Now, with this unabridged version I feel like the original black and white version has been restored to full color and in 4K.
More detail, fuller story, and read by the author!
If you listened to the old version, you’ll love this one. And if you read The Big Short, you’ll see the origins of that story here. Enjoy!

Not for me due to excessive use of f-bombs
Had to stop after chapter 5 due to the ongoing, unnecessary use of language. Had I not just finished Moneyball, I would have simply thought this is the language of Wall Street, but now convinced this is more the language of Michael Lewis as his characters have the same vocabulary. Sorry I wasted 2 credits supporting this author.

I love Micheal Lewis but I could have skipped this one
I am a huge fan of Micheal Lewis and his later books as well as his podcast. I love the way he thinks about the world and challenges assumptions.
That being said, this book was one I could have skipped. I felt lost most of the time due to the revolving door of “characters” in the book that I couldn’t distinguish one from the other. I felt lost for the first half of the book just trying to understand who everyone was and why I should care about them and then just like that, they disappeared from the story. I honestly don’t know that I could tell you what the thesis of this book was other than, wallstreet was crazy in the 80s and a lot of people got rich.
The one plus was Micheal Lewis did a great job narrating.

makes me glad I am not a Broker.
The beginning of this book makes me realize how glad I am a trader, not a stock broker.
I would hate to work with these over inflated, testosterone filled kids in grown mens bodies.
I always thought a brokerage ferm would be ran by professionals that treated other's with respect,
although the Author of the book could have over exaggerated the characters to keep the reader/listener interested.
I haven't finished the book and dought I will, nothing to learn or keep me interested.
Glad I didn't get the paper back version.

Some sort of new age audio book
5 minutes in and I can’t stand the multiple voice narration, stupid sound effects. Hated the self promoting pitch for some other series/production before I’m even into the first chapter. The author seems to also be a word salad promoter as well. Stay far away from this “audio book”. If you like the noise of morning radio sport shows, you’ll love this. How do I get my credit back?

Still holds up!
I was very happy that Michael Lewis decided to narrate the book himself. He does a great job of telling the story(because he was there when a lot of it happened).
You don’t have to be interested in bonds or stocks to find this book interesting. It’s great whether you know a lot or very little.
I got the audible membership specifically to listen to this book.
