INSTANT NATIONAL BESTSELLER.

From the #1 bestselling Canadian author of Looking for Jane comes a riveting novel about one journalist's harrowing journey into an infamous real-life 1960s women's prison—and the detective who uncovers her story decades later.

Toronto, 1961: Emily Radcliffe works as an editorial assistant at Chatelaine magazine, surrounded by the best female reporters in the country, whose articles tackle the controversial topics no other women's publication dares to touch. When a bombshell letter from an inmate at the notorious Mercer Women's Prison lands on Emily's desk, she sees the scoop of a lifetime—one that could launch her career as a journalist. But after going undercover to investigate the inmate's shocking claims, Emily discovers that getting into the prison is the easy part; the real challenge will be getting back out . . .

Huron County, 1996: Unidentified female remains are discovered in an unmarked grave in a small-town Ontario cemetery, and Detective Rachel Mackenzie is tasked with unraveling the mystery. But when the investigation leads her to the now-shuttered Mercer Women's Prison, the family trauma she's kept buried for years threatens to surface.

Inspired by true events, Liberty Street is at once poignant and dazzling—an unforgettable, intertwining story about resilience, mental health, and the power of female connection.

I love this author so much. Great storytelling, I love the in-depth research she's done and especially appreciate that it is set where I live. Tearjerker at the end. I actually recommend all her books.

great storytelling!

While I really liked the intention, the story line just didn’t cut it. The novel starts off strong and has 2 great storylines going on. In one storyline, the supposedly smart main character does something so unbelievably stupid, it ruined the story for me. The other storyline has great substance but then left me feeling a little ripped off the way things tied up. Great potential that fell short.

I don't even know how to begin my praise for this incredible novel of Canadian and women's history. I love being a women of today, and this book really shows how modern women owe their freedom to the brave women of the past.

This was a stressed filled mystery wondering how the two timelines would be connected. I listened well into the night. I really plan to read to this book one again, next time a a more relaxed pace.

My only negative comment, is that the audio does not include the author's note. I was really hoping to hear which sections of the book were based on historical fact.

A must read for all women

This book is unlistenable. The issues are real and the history of the treatment of women in institutions deserves a thoughtful, compassionate re-telling. This book is not that. The characters are cartoonishly one dimensional. There is the ‘evil doctor’ - that’s a quote. The plucky, saccharine heroine w a heart of gold and so much moxy! This book makes a mockery of the real history of these types of institutions. The actual history is bad enough. It didn’t need to be dramatized like this to be compelling.

Cartoonish Villains make a mockery of real issues
