À propos de cet audio

The extraordinary story of Stefania Podgorska, a Polish teenager who chose bravery and humanity by hiding 13 Jews in her attic during WWII - from number one New York Times best-selling author Sharon Cameron.

One knock at the door, and Stefania has a choice to make....

It is 1943, and for four years, 16-year-old Stefania has been working for the Diamant family in their grocery store in Przemsyl, Poland, singing her way into their lives and hearts. She has even made a promise to one of their sons, Izio - a betrothal they must keep secret since she is Catholic and the Diamants are Jewish.

But everything changes when the German army invades Przemsyl. The Diamants are forced into the ghetto, and Stefania is alone in an occupied city, the only one left to care for Helena, her six-year-old sister. And then comes the knock at the door. Izio's brother Max has jumped from the train headed to a death camp. Stefania and Helena make the extraordinary decision to hide Max, and eventually 12 more Jews. Then they must wait, every day, for the next knock at the door, the one that will mean death. When the knock finally comes, it is two Nazi officers, requisitioning Stefania's house for the German army.

With two Nazis below, 13 hidden Jews above, and a little sister by her side, Stefania has one more excruciating choice to make.

Also includes a recorded conversation with author Sharon Cameron and reader Beata Poźniak, discussing Beata's decades long friendship with Stefania Podgórska and the legacy of the Podgórska sisters.

This book is both captivating and potentially transformative. That these events actually happened and what that might tell us about ourselves and what we've collectively come out of, so powerful and important.

Beautifully voiced. Just excellent.

The narrator’s accent makes the story more impactful. She brings emotion to the many adverse situations faced by the heroine. This is a true story however author had to make up a lot. She did a good job keeping the story interesting.

The bravery of the heroine. How she thinks her way out of every adverse situation.

The true storyline captivating from the start. I have listened to many audible books . this narrator of this book is so good and sounds so authentic. She brings each character alive so the reader feels she is listening to actual people and not somone reading a book narrator. I can't write enough positives about the reader. She is the best in this field that I have listened to on audible. there are many holocaust stories that include e rescuers I hope the narrator will read other stories of polish rescuers. having said that, Stefania and Helena's stoy is unique in the circumstances and events. Ligjt in Hidden Places truly is a riveting and astounding story.

The story is an authentic account of Stefania Podgórska and her sister Helena who successfully hid 13 people of Jewish heritage in the attic of their apartment. It is an unbelievable story demonstrating many times when quick thinking on the spot was required, incredible bravery, compassion and kindness by 2 children (16 years and 6 years) that goes beyond what anyone could ever imagine. Contributing to the authenticity of the book is the amazing narration by Beata Pozniak who is Polish, has the appropriate dialect, and who had a later friendly relationship with Stefania Podgórska. Just amazing!!! It is my favourite Holocaust story to date! Upon researching, I have viewed a few interviews Stefania Podgórska had given and look forward to watching the movie Hidden In Silence based on this historical piece. Thank you so much to the author for her diligence, hard work, and relationships with others such as Beata Pozniak helping to bring this to fruition. Like other books written about this time period, it will make me think even when I complain of the cold or how hungry I am, that I should be ashamed of myself. I have never known anything of the sort. God Bless you all!!

BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ
