I should have expected it, but it is one of the most disturbing novels I've ever read. Right up there with Iain Banks' Wasp Factory.

The back half of this book is incredibly well paced and the final few paragraphs are pure sci fi excellence. I fell off a bit during the beginning, but once I started picking up on context clues I couldn't stop.

I have so many questions about where this falls in the series timeline, if the Carryx here are at the height of their power yet and, if not, how long passes between this book and Captive's War. When and how exactly did Anjiin become isolated from the rest of humanity? Will Dafyd be waging his war on the distant remains of the original human faction? One of the main threats to the Carryx in the main series highly resembles Livesuit technology. I'm about to invest in red yarn.

I'm never dissapointed picking up a book from Corey, and there's something about Jefferson Mays' narration that just hits different. Great production all around.

You will get answers in this short story. It complicates things in all the good ways. The authors are playing with time and I’m always a fan.
