Publisher's Summary
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes an incandescent story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope, and the meaning of home.
In the rugged Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest - nearly a million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. From deep within this old growth forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she offers no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past.
Having retreated to her western Washington hometown after a scandal left her career in ruins, child psychiatrist Dr. Julia Cates is determined to free the extraordinary little girl she calls Alice from a prison of unimaginable fear and isolation. To reach her, Julia must discover the truth about Alice’s past - although doing so requires help from Julia’s estranged sister, a local police officer. The shocking facts of Alice’s life test the limits of Julia’s faith and strength, even as she struggles to make a home for Alice - and for herself.

The narration is terrible.
This could be a good book but I can’t get past the horrible narration. The voices given to the two main female characters present them as weak damsels in distress, with minimal intelligence. So disappointed.

Narrator ruined it for me.
I've been trying to get through this one for 3 weeks or so now. I've made a note to avoid anything narrated by Suzanne Toren. The mixing was also all over the place - Ellie's voice was like a whisper and Peanut almost always startled/deafened me. Not a good time.

The story was not too bad overall maybe needed a little bit more excitement or zing seem to drag out a bit but the performance of the story that was read was scary when she made her voices into different people characters in the book she sounded demon like I do not like her performance might’ve been a better story if somebody else read it

So good.
I don’t remember the last time a book made me cry. And this keeps you intrigued immediately and then absolutely on the edge of your seat. This is going to be a book I read every other year if not EVERY year, when it gets cold. It kinda gives 90s mystery vibes, and it’s very cozy at times as well too. Always check trigger warnings, of course. 💖💖💖

It was ok.
I found it predictable, and I simply didn't get sucked into the story. I love books that you forget your listening to a story. With this book, I felt I could almost fuller through the author's thought processes in each step of the story, making it dull. It wasn't a bad book, it was just a little meh.

Terrible narration & slow story. Returned the book
I have read Kristin Hannah‘s books and really enjoyed them. This one, however, has a terrible narrator. She sounds much older than the character is supposed to be and is very boring. The story is also very slow in developing. I read half of the book and could not take any more. Very disappointing.

Slow to Start, Not a Fan of Narrator
Kristin Hannah is one of my favorite artists and I was waiting for this book to be released. I bought it instantly. The I started it, and almost stopped due to the narration of this book. It was such a slow start and I cringed at her voice and take on various characters. If you’re on the fence on listening vs reading, pick up the hard copy! In the end, I liked the story, but it was just thought to get into.

Slow moving. Really bad male voice narration
The narration was not good at all for the male voices. One of the characters is supposed to be Mr chiseled jaw, blue eyed, dark messy hair hunk but sounds like a nasal issue, whining voice dork. The story was slow moving throughout and the ending was quick and pretty lame.
