Publisher's Summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes an incandescent story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope, and the meaning of home.

In the rugged Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest - nearly a million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. From deep within this old growth forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she offers no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past.

Having retreated to her western Washington hometown after a scandal left her career in ruins, child psychiatrist Dr. Julia Cates is determined to free the extraordinary little girl she calls Alice from a prison of unimaginable fear and isolation. To reach her, Julia must discover the truth about Alice’s past - although doing so requires help from Julia’s estranged sister, a local police officer. The shocking facts of Alice’s life test the limits of Julia’s faith and strength, even as she struggles to make a home for Alice - and for herself.

“One of [Kristin Hannah’s] most compelling and riveting novels.” - Booklist

The narration is terrible.

This could be a good book but I can’t get past the horrible narration. The voices given to the two main female characters present them as weak damsels in distress, with minimal intelligence. So disappointed.

Great Story, not my favourite narrator

Great story and characters, and writing is beautiful as always with KH. The “voices” were a little off...maybe it was just me??

Horrible, irritating narration

Narration was unbearable. Seemed like a great story but I couldn’t tolerate it for more than a few chapters. Very disappointed.

Narrator ruined it for me.

I've been trying to get through this one for 3 weeks or so now. I've made a note to avoid anything narrated by Suzanne Toren. The mixing was also all over the place - Ellie's voice was like a whisper and Peanut almost always startled/deafened me. Not a good time.

Awful narrator

The narrator ruined the book. Every time she voiced peanut she was shouting and sounded like an old timey gangster. I couldn’t even finish the book.

So so

The story was not too bad overall maybe needed a little bit more excitement or zing seem to drag out a bit but the performance of the story that was read was scary when she made her voices into different people characters in the book she sounded demon like I do not like her performance might’ve been a better story if somebody else read it

A story to remember

You can get lost in the life of this wee girl. Her living in the woods was scary and you wanted to go help
the people looking for her. I hated to wait for the story to get finished because I wanted her to stay with
"mummy". I loved this story.

So good.

I don’t remember the last time a book made me cry. And this keeps you intrigued immediately and then absolutely on the edge of your seat. This is going to be a book I read every other year if not EVERY year, when it gets cold. It kinda gives 90s mystery vibes, and it’s very cozy at times as well too. Always check trigger warnings, of course. 💖💖💖

It was ok.

I found it predictable, and I simply didn't get sucked into the story. I love books that you forget your listening to a story. With this book, I felt I could almost fuller through the author's thought processes in each step of the story, making it dull. It wasn't a bad book, it was just a little meh.

A great Read (listen!)

This was an extremely interesting story. A typical Kristen Hannah novel- interesting, well written with just the right amount of suspense. The story line is quite different but believable. The narrator added greatly - her varied voices were excellent. I hated the book to end!

Horrible narration

I can’t decide if the book was good or not, I hated the narrators voice. So obnoxious. I need to remember to listen to a sample before buying the book.

Terrible narration & slow story. Returned the book

I have read Kristin Hannah‘s books and really enjoyed them. This one, however, has a terrible narrator. She sounds much older than the character is supposed to be and is very boring. The story is also very slow in developing. I read half of the book and could not take any more. Very disappointing.

Slow to Start, Not a Fan of Narrator

Kristin Hannah is one of my favorite artists and I was waiting for this book to be released. I bought it instantly. The I started it, and almost stopped due to the narration of this book. It was such a slow start and I cringed at her voice and take on various characters. If you’re on the fence on listening vs reading, pick up the hard copy! In the end, I liked the story, but it was just thought to get into.

Great start to 2021 Reading List

I've always had an affinity for Kristin Hannah's books - especially the Firefly Lane series - so I had high hopes for this one.

To say I was blown away would be an understatement. I practically devoured the Audiobook in a couple of sittings... making myself carve out time just so I could see what would happen next.

Narrator

I am such a fan of Kristian Hannah but it was so hard to get through this book because the narration was so off. Voices so wrong for the carectors. Horrible duplication. Totally took away from the story.

Slow moving. Really bad male voice narration

The narration was not good at all for the male voices. One of the characters is supposed to be Mr chiseled jaw, blue eyed, dark messy hair hunk but sounds like a nasal issue, whining voice dork. The story was slow moving throughout and the ending was quick and pretty lame.

Excxellent!

Excellent! Very good and different story. Could not put it down. I was surprised by the ending. Kristen Hannah does it again in Magic Hour.
