Publisher's Summary

As the zombie epidemic wanes, one community hopes to expand—but a menacing rival group will do anything to stop them—in this post-apocalyptic horror series.

On the isle of Big Tancook, Collie Jones is making plans. She informs her fellow islanders that it’s time to resume her original mission: to find other survivors of the apocalypse, screen them, and bring them back with her. Every person who joins them is another valuable addition to their skill and gene pool.

But first, Collie must return to the place from whence she originally came and secure the elaborate government bunker known as Whitecap as well as its vast store of munitions. Assembling a team that includes mountain man Gus Berry, Collie returns to the mainland—and confronts a new enemy.

It seems a rival group is also determined to locate survivors, intending to build an empire. And they don’t like competition . . .

You like zombies? You’re in for a riot.

This is an absolute gem of a zombie story. Plus! It’s set in Canada!

I have gone though my fair share of zombie stories and the dynamic of the author’s amazingly concise, yet descriptive story and RC Bray’s rendition of it makes me see the scenes as clearly as I was watching it on the Tube.

Great book love the fact it’s happening in Canada

All of the Canadian references mixed with some raunchy language is quite entertaining. Another great read from R.C Bray

I tried…

How such an interesting protagonist has been reduced to a feckless, pointless damsel in distress I’ll never know. What was once a very flawed, yet engaging character is second fiddle to…. Well anyone else at any point on every page.
Gus has been reduced to a whimpering dead weight known only for saying, “huh”,”jeezuz chrice”, and “let’s get out of here”.
I liked him way better as a drunk. Now he’s some pseudo-moralist castrado.

I think Gus actually died with the rats: all this other stuff is current date sensibility purgatory as penance for getting his teeth kicked in.

I’m ranting. I gave this book a chance after the disappointment of the last one. I’m gonna go see what the captain’s up to. This one’s a pass.

Author and Narrator excellent team

K.C. Blackmore (Author) writes an outstanding story with descriptions that made me cringe. Characters are not perfect just like real humans. K.C. Blackmore writes like he was in the Canadian military using terms and words only heard in the military which really adds to the story.
R.C. Bray (Narrator) is an outstanding voice actor, I'm sure he could read a phone book a keep the audience enthralled.
The Mountain Man is the best of the post apocalypse zombie book I've read/listened to I don't want it to end. I just started book 6 and so far so excellent.

slow but steady

RC Bray knocks it out of the park again but unfortunately the story was a little slow to begin with and I struggle but I'm glad I persevered it's an amazing book

Good story

I felt this was a good story however not as good as some of the previous. I did not like the direction of character development for several of the characters in this book by the end. Hopefully the series will pick back up by the next book.

Read this series!

Collie makes this book series even better. I really enjoyed the end of this series - very different from the beginning books and more action-packed.

Gus gets Woke

Is this Mountain Man aka Gus or Mountain Woman Collie???? Just like the zombie apocalypse, Wokeness has taken over all media. Gus is just along for the ride while the sassy Collie is always smarter, stronger and tougher than our main character. Give Collie her own series and give us back the old Gus!!!

Disappointing

This started as a good series but now is just a disappointment. The hereo is second fiddle now. An the crazy plot holes They start from the get go from shooting the guys with the slaves. Only they didn't know they had slaves or anything about them. So we are left with the idea our heroes were killing people for kicks. Crossbows that reach people using snipper rifles and on and on.

Should have stopped at 4!

OK, I know everyone has their own likes and dislikes. I'm really not sure what it is about this one, but I really just did NOT like it! I went back and listened to the entire series again ... and I think I had my closure with the ending of Well Fed.

I love Mr. Blackmore's writing ... I love RC's narration ... I love the Mountain Man series. I just did NOT care for this addition.

Updated: 4-24-2020 -- OK ... minor update, but I'm not changing my rating. I've tried going back and re-listened to the entire series. I actually like this book up until The Leather was heavily involved. From this point on, I just did not care for the interaction.

Poor - Gus sidelined - 2019 strikes again!

I've read the previous books, and enjoyed them. RC Bray is one of my favorite narrators, and did his usual superb job.

However this book was a huge disappointment. I rarely stop reading any book half way through, but couldn't keep enough interest to do so here. So to be fair, maybe the book improved by half way, but I was completely done by then.

This installment is disappointing because of it's over the top focus on Collie. OMG... Blackmore blows soo much sunshine up this "operators" butt, she needs to be tied down lest she float away. Strong female characters (just like a strong male character) are great "if" written well, and if so let's have them. If writen in the way Blackmore writes Collie, they become WOKE tropes and it's all over but the eye rolling. Star Wars anyone? :P

if you want more of "Gus" in his dystopian future, don't read this. Maybe the next will be better?

Plagiarism from underground

This book has nearly singlehandedly ruined an excellent series! First, the story’s bones is almost exactly the same as the Road Warrior movie. Second, I almost called it quits in chapter 38, when Gus committed every horror movie cliché in a matter of minutes. Does anybody really think that a guy who survived this long into the apocalypse would not take the time to confirm the controls and function of a newly acquired firearm? Or the oh so tired, ‘He bumped the rifle with his fingers and it FLEW five feet out of his reach.’? Or the equally, appallingly exhausted, ‘As he passed through the door, the barrel smacked the frame and flew from his grasp.’? This is lazy, lame, rehashed, garbage. Either for the sake of extending page count or the entire book was nothing more than half an idea that was made to fulfill a contract or to squeeze money out of fans’ pockets.
I absolutely loved this series, but this book is my last, freshest memory of it and has left a bad taste in mouth. Now I’ll have to reread the first ones to remember what this book should have been.

FAN-FRACKING-TASTIC!!!!

Blackmore just opened up a whole new can of whoopass, expanded the Mountain man universe with this incredible story. RC Bray bright back old friends, and introduced us to New ones, and of course new ball-breaking bad guys, peppered with monsters. this series is my favorite in the genre, and podium audio is a top notch outfit, never disappoints me. Kieth is a genius at stringing words together and Bob brings it all to life, I can't recommend this series enough. at the end of this story, Bray asks the reader to visit them in social media, so come join the fan group 50 shades of Bray on Facebook, a group of fans who Geek out on all of these great stories in the Bray universe!!

A struggle - so far

The series has been really good so far, but for some reason this one is really hard to get into. I honestly feel - 4 hours into the book - the series could have ended with the last book. I’ll update the review when I can get to the end of the book...sorry.

Not up to par.

I love the series in general, the character Gus is the main reason for continued following. This book lacked the previously enthralling plot. Very dry story telling, like the author was struggling or just trying to complete the work.

Worst of the series

Only got this book because I have listened to the rest of the series already. Wanted to see what else it had to offer. I liked most of the previous books so I was hoping this would be as good. It wasn’t! Some of the stupidest writing I have ever listened to. Most of the profanity was ridiculously stupid. Totally unnecessary for the progression of the story. Had a hard time listening to the whole thing. Should have ended the series before this if this is all that the writer could come up with. This may be just a wasted credit. Very disappointed. The only positive is the narrator. He does the best he could do with the material. I can’t imagine how bad this would have been with a bad narrator.

best yet

Blackmore's best writing yet. When you combine this with R.C. Bray's narration you get an instant classic. Most series get watered down over time but the mountain man series continue to just get better. Highly recommend this series.
