Story
In 1908, near Folsom, New Mexico, a cowboy discovered the remains of a herd of extinct giant bison. By examining flint points embedded in the bones, archeologists later determined that a band of humans had killed and butchered the animals 12,450 years ago. This discovery vastly expanded America's known human history but also revealed the long-standing danger Homo sapiens presented to the continent's evolutionary richness. Distinguished scholar Dan Flores's ambitious history chronicles the epoch in which humans and animals have coexisted in the "wild new world" of North America.

The “mountain men” were the hunters and trappers who fiercely strode the Rocky Mountains in the early to mid-1800s. They braved the elements in search of the skins of beavers and other wild animals, to sell or barter for goods. The lifestyle of the mountain men could be harsh, existing as they did among animals, and spending most of their days and nights living and camping out in the great unexplored wilds of the Rockies.

In the summer of 1913, the wooden-hulled brigantine Karluk departed Canada for the Arctic Ocean. At the helm was Captain Bob Bartlett, considered the world’s greatest living ice navigator. The expedition’s visionary leader was a flamboyant impresario named Vilhjalmur Stefansson hungry for fame. Just six weeks after the Karluk departed, giant ice floes closed in around her. As the ship became icebound, Stefansson disembarked with five companions and struck out on what he claimed was a 10-day caribou hunting trip. Most on board would never see him again.

Hunting: You've Got to Be Kidding! is a wonderful true story about a man with a dream. Written by Kevin A. Dettler, it is a humorous and emotional story of his endeavor to achieve what only 120 hunters in the world had accomplished. The book takes you through a chronological order of years as the author hunts all the big game species that call North America home. You will be entertained as the book's focus dwells not on the hunting, but on the mental processes associated with hunting trophy big game animals. Best of all are the many humorous "you've got to be kidding" moments!

Gripping and often poetic, Alone Against the North is a classic adventure story of single-minded obsession, physical hardship, and the restless sense of wonder that every explorer has in common. What Shoalts discovered as he paddled downriver was a series of unmapped waterfalls that could easily have killed him. Just as astonishing was the media reaction when he got back to civilization. He was feted by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and congratulated by the Governor General. People were enthralled by Shoalts’s proof that the world is bigger than we think.

Loved, and learned!
I listened while heading to and from a couple of recent hunting trips. I found story tellers details on what they were thinking while in life threatening situations very interesting. And on how quickly things can change.
A few days ago I was hunting alone and decided I would put up a ladder stand which required the trimming of some limbs from a large spruce tree. I had a chain saw and headed in to start trimming. I would need to climb up 10-15 feet to use the saw with one hand while holding myself in position with the other.
Having listened to a few stories from this book that morning I decided I would wait until the next day to use the saw and put up the stand when a couple of friends would be there with me.

I really enjoyed the first close calls and was worried this one would have lesser stories on it. That is not the case, at least for me. This audio book has some of my favorite.
A criticism I have is that if you listen to the Meat eater podcast you will likely have heard Steve use most or at least half of his story intro/outro/transition content.

unexpected language
pretty good stories to make you think about reality of the outdoors and the harshness that it can be. the readers are not professional so the voices maybe aren't the best but can be tolerated. listen with my young children thinking that it would be a clean listen but there is many uses of inappropriate language for certain ages or if you just don't like hearing that stuff when you listen to a story which is my case. won't purchase another read from Steve rinella because of this issue.

A Storyteller’s Will to Survive
This second edition of Campfire Stories did not disappoint. I found myself listening to the first edition multiple times, and I will no doubt, do the same with this version as well.
For me, it’s the raw emotion. The despair that these storytellers convey will bring you to tears, and make you really consider how you may have reacted, or processed each situation if had been you, rather than them. Their will to survive is epic. What would I do? Could I keep my wits about me to keep myself alive?
After listening to how these folks did it, I sure feel like my chances are better now, than before I heard them tell their stories.
Amazing job by everyone involved, from top to bottom. At this point, I can only hope, for a third installment.
