About this listen

A man must survive the zombie apocalypse armed with only a shotgun, a Samurai bat, and the will to live among the unliving in this horror series debut.

It’s been two years since civilization ended in an unstoppable wave of chaos and blood. Now, former house painter Augustus “Gus” Berry lives a day-to-day existence of waking up, getting drunk, and preparing for the inevitable moment when “they” will come up the side of his mountain and penetrate his fortress.

Living on the outskirts of Annapolis, Gus goes scavenging for whatever supplies remain in the undead suburbia below. Every time he descends the mountain could be his last. But when Gus encounters another survivor, he soon realizes the zombie horde may not be the greatest threat he faces . . .

Well I really enjoyed this book. I found myself listening for 2 or 3 hours at a time, fully engulfed by the story. It has a fairly standard outline, for a zombie tale, but there are some original bits. The tension and action build nicely. You can feel it coming. The violence is graphic and described in gruesome detail. The narrator is superb. He jumps from character to character with unbelievable consistency and speed. I loved the fact that it took place in Nova Scotia and yet it’s not a slave to the locale. The story will appeal to all zombie and action/horror fans. I did, however, enjoy the low key Canadianisms and helps to maintain the contemporary zombie story adage that this “turn,” or whatever you want to call it, could take place anywhere, anytime, and what would YOU do? One more comment and I have to repeat how good the narrator is, but he’s definitely not a Canadian. Because there was one word he pronounced incorrectly. Only ONE word. That was his only flaw but after about the tenth time it became very annoying. But I got over it. I would absolutely recommend this book to all lovers of this genre.

I was hooked after Hospital, and now can't wait to complete the series. Fun, violent exciting.

I am that person who fixates on one genre then reads everything or listens. This series of books from is amazing. Jen is the king of descriptive imagery. 9 times out of 10 I stopped to think about what he wrote and in most cases laughed out loud. Very, very well done. You can picture the story as it moves along. Read the 2 prequels first then read the ‘Hospital’ then the 4 books that follow. You will love the narrative. Bravo for a Canadian author.

Solid story, great voice. I wish he had a little more variance in his performance. Scott and Gus should sound at least a little different from each other. But for sweet Jesus' sake with as many times as he misread Toque you'd think someone would have caught it.

It's a Toque. Not a toke
