Publisher's Summary

A heartwarming story of friendship and demonic possession.

The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since the fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act...different. She's moody. She's irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she's nearby.

Abby's investigation leads her to some startling discoveries - and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

Like an unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist, My Best Friend's Exorcism blends teen angst, adolescent drama, unspeakable horrors, and a mix of '80s pop songs into a pulse-pounding supernatural thriller.

Just a fun 80's read

This was a impulse listen and well it really hit it out the park. Just a fun best friends 80s story with a demon.

Not what I was expecting.

I wasn’t expecting this book to feel like something from the Stranger Things Universe. There’s a fun and exciting feeling to the book that got me hooked!
If you want a story about friends and teen girls in the 80’s this is the book for you.

Lots of fun!

It gets preachy in spots but it IS about exorcising your best friend so….whatcha gonna do? Goofy and gross and weird and sweet. Great 80s nostalgia trip and each chapter having a song title was awesome. Emily Woo Zeller is a great voice talent, too.

Spooky and fun!

This was such a fun read!! Why, oh why, have I not read more from Grady Hendrix? (I say as I start more of his books asap). I looooved this. It was recommended to me for the “stranger things” vibes and it delivered. I think horror/comedy might be one of my new favorite genres. The characters were great, and I was hooked from the moment I started. The only reason (well, 2 reasons really) that I’m giving this 4 and not 5 is because at about the 85% point, the whole book is basically just yelling. ————-SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT————Honestly — the exorcism is yelling. For like, an hour. Very intense, but got very repetitive. Also, the exorcist just straight up leaving??? Second reason: I didn’t like the ending :( I feel like it could have ended with them just being best friends. I didn’t think it needed to go off and say that they became and adults and grew apart? I felt like, obviously life happens and childhood friends don’t always stay friends, but I just wanted a better ending. I didn’t want to hear that one of them died of old age. I wanted it to end in the 80s-90s where it started, with them as best friends. After everything, that’s what I needed and didn’t quite get it. BUT, other than that, loved, loved, LOVED.

Difficult to put Down

Extremely well done, overall. The character development works so well that one forgets it’s fiction. This is high on my recommendation list.

Revisit the 80s Lifestyle with a Subtext of Spooky

I found this book really easy to listen to, and was pleased the language was not dumbed down to the intellectual level of a teenager. It was fun to revisit the 1980s lifestyle and the storyline was well organized. I was genuinely frustrated with the indifference of some of the adults lack of insight which was conveyed well in the story. Also there are a few gross out scenes for horror fans, once you read, you will understand. ;) One thing is for sure, only the luckiest person in the world has a best friend like this...
