Publisher's Summary

My fairy tale turned into a cautionary one.

Inked in tar and sealed in tears.

From Wall Street Journal best sellers L.J. Shen and Parker S. Huntington comes an explosive marriage of inconvenience...between a tarnished Romeo and a reluctant Juliet.

It was supposed to be a harmless kiss at a lavish debutante ball. A clandestine moment with a handsome stranger.

But unlike his namesake, my Romeo isn’t driven by love. He’s fueled by revenge.

To him, I’m a chess piece. Leverage.

His rival’s betrothed.

To me, he is a man deserving of poison. A dark prince I refuse to marry.

He thinks I’ll accept my fate. Well, I plan to rewrite it. And in my story, Juliet doesn’t die.

But Romeo? He perishes.

Belly Laughter!

Only Jacob Morgan could deliver Shen’s awesome dry humour. Loved the story, although started out a little slow, it’s still a five star! But it was the humour that knocked it out of the park! Delightful read!

〰️ YOU’RE ALL IN FOR A WONDERFUL WONDERFUL RIDE 〰️

This book was sooooo damn good with its quick-witted banter and humor as aloof, emotionless, all work no play unwilling groom Romeo and his equally unwilling, feisty, bride-to-be Dallas are forced to marry. Their journey is a phenomenal non-stop fest for your heart and soul as mental images of Dallas and Romeo’s feisty verbal strikes and volleys, well-planned manoeuvres and snaps and snipes light up your mental big screen. Slowly magnetic chemistry weakens ice shields and erases battle lines.. and, the strikes and well-written chapters, bring two complete opposites closer.. and closer.. and maybe closer. It was a funny, emotionally tumultuous, laugh-out-loud, well-paced enemies-lovers journey with growth, sexual chemistry, heat and packed an emotional dip and punch too as Stellar and Jacob’s fantastic vocal talents brought each and every glorious scene to life.

Worth a credit? Yes.. it’s an absolutely.. positively.. necessary book to have in your ‘virtual’ library. A brooding, handsome hero who’s ‘gone without’ for five years because of his broken dead heart.. and a sassy, feisty, junk-snacking heroine who loves.. loves.. loves to wind him up and watch him unravel with a gleeful smile on her face are the stars of the show. But there’s a three-way bromance with group text chats between friends that have interesting secondary characters.. and the exchanges and dynamic were so very warm and wonderful too. And there’s swoons and drools, and sex and and and.. oh, so much more.. delivering far more than I was ever expecting. Well done Leigh ➕ Parker 👏 and Jacob ➕ Stella 👏.

Beauty, Beast, & Gone with the Wind?

Not much reinvented here, but I bought this book solely because the title interested me. Is everyone so wealthy you want to vomit? Yes. Are there any shoes besides Loubutins in the gd universe? Apparently not. Our *beauty* is a Barbie with a book addiction who just can’t wait to birth children (LOLz). Romeo, oh Romeo—if only you were a much darker Romeo, I’d perch under your balcony and spy on your romance! Alas! The second chapter presents a drippingly dark Romeo (I mean, his initial seduction is total fire!), but ugh the rest of the tale does everything it can to put a wet blanket over every bit of steam heat for the rest of the book (I mean, the electric toothbrush play seemed *totally* dark in Paris! Except, nah. False advertising).

I don’t know when this was written, but there are some tell-tale Christian Grey-ness details put into Romeo that just feel terribly boring. Plus virgin girl. HO-HUM.

Corny, but cute. Bratty virgin narratives are not my favorite pick. I did laugh a few times though (and I love Shen’s books for those chuckles), so go on. Buy it if you like the beauty/beast genre. Dallas is truly a Southern ding-dong though. (bell. I mean southern bellllle, y’all). And her dad SUCKS. I think I felt the same away about Disney’s heroine’s dad too, so, it tracks.

Started out good

I’m halfway through this book and I’m so annoyed by the female character. It started out good and now, she’s like a silly little girl whose antics scream “any attention is better than no attention “. The narrators are good. It is a bit steamy but I’m just so over her. Not sure if I’ll be able to finish the book.

Mean and shallow; a match made in hell

Romeo and Dallas were so utterly unlikable that it eclipsed the stellar narration and the little bits of the story that were well written, like the text-ball-busting between Romeo and his two friends.

Dallas is a 21 year old Southern Bell whose only goal is to marry rich and have babies. The story opens with her at a gala, caring only about who has the latest Prada this or Louboutin that. She’s got a fiancé and yet goes to second base with a man she’s met minutes before. And, when it turns to scandal, allows herself to be “forced” into marriage … because she’s got zero spine, self respect, or skills to make her own way. In what modern day Georgia does scandal make it impossible for a hot girl to find another man? Just move across the country, get a job, and come back to the 21st century. I can’t overstate how much I hated that her only worth was as his trophy. Why she agrees to marriage, or stays, or comes to love him makes zero sense.

Romeo is a cold, calculating A hole, even ten hours into the book. He demeans her at every opportunity and controls every aspect of her life. He’s a 31 year old billionaire who could escape his toxic life simply by cutting ties with his A hole dad. Yet, he’s so vindictive that he puts himself (and now Dallas) through years of misery just to deny his dad happiness too. What’s there to like? In the final hour, there’s a ridiculous reveal of a childhood backstory to explain his present day hangups. There’s hyperbolic and random plots involving stickups and poison. Oh, and he’s an arms dealer. This isn’t just a romance book, it’s a telenovela on steroids.

The numerous sex scenes are crude, and worse, endlessly degrading for her. And, she just takes it. The only pushback is her being a spoiled brat, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars buying every color of this or that material good, destroying Romeo’s things, or purposefully making a spectacle of herself.
I can’t believe I suffered through the whole thing.

Better than her recent books

Another reviewer commented that this was as good as Shen’s older books, as lots of readers haven’t liked her more recent books as much. I wouldn’t go that far, but this was closer to her older titles. It was good, but lacked passion. Both narrators are great. I’m glad Shen got a better narrator than for a lot of her past books. As usual, there were many grammatical or wording errors in this book. The male MC says several times that he “chucked it to X” instead of “chalked it up to X.” Maybe he was saying “chock” instead of “chuck,” but both are incorrect. “X and I” was used several times when “X and me” should have been used. I’ve come to expect this from self-published authors, as they don’t hire editors or proofreaders, but it still detracts from the listening experience. Also, the female narrator correctly pronounced Maybach, but the male narrator incorrectly pronounced it. These are picky things, but they do take away from the overall experience. However, I still recommend this book if you’re a fan of LJ Shen. Just don’t expect it to be as good as Vicious (with the exception that My Dark Romeo doesn’t subject listeners to Savannah Peachwood.)

I Love Dallas!!!

It is so hard to find the right leading lady with a fantastic narrator. (They are sometimes whiny and annoying or weak minded at times. I get so distracted by annoying behavior or not so good narration. BUT, I loved Dallas. She was funny, witty, sexy, and so caring. ) Romeo is everything LJ's alphas are known to be. Complete a-hole material but with those redeeming, "obsessed with a lady I shouldn't have qualities". This book was fun, SEXY (lots of spice), emotional, and with just enough angst without tiring you out. This book brought me back to life. I have been so bored with audiobooks lately that I have been reading old ones. But I didn't want to stop listening to this one. Also, I love Jacob Morgan's voice. Geez. It was so perfect for Romeo. Although, there were parts of this that kind of put me in the mindset of Cillain Fitzpatrick from the Villain, I was all for it. Already categorized as a favorite. So many great one liners, banter, and sexy talk. Worth every penny!!!!

Not my Dark Romeo

I love book by both of these authors so I automatically hits Buy when I saw this, sadly it is not my cup of tea.

I had a hard time rooting for the heroine, at the beginning I could understand her behavior but to do the same thing all the way through the book was just ugh 😑

I love the performance but the story needed work. I needed to know more about her why she was the way she was and why she seems to have no drive or desire to do anything

Unlikable characters

I’m confused by all the positive reviews. Despite my best efforts I was unable to finish this book, primarily because both characters were completely unlikable. Additionally, the entire premise of the forced marriage is really unbelievable (especially as someone who grew-up in the conservative south.

Light spoilers follow:

FL’s (Dallas) defining characteristic is that she really likes food, and loves to read (mostly smut). I love to eat and read as much as the next person, but I was 3/4 through the book and nothing else has emerged about her other than she wants to have a baby. She wastes all her time spending insane amounts of money, ruining furniture, partying until midnight, watching reality TV, and sleeping until 3pm. I finally gave up when she implied getting a college degree was a waste because she is already incredibly intelligent and that degrees are just to impress people. Dallas TRY to improve yourself. Nothing about her is endearing. I spent most of the book waiting for her to surprise both the readers and ML with her hidden depths (as implied at the beginning) but they actually aren’t there. Using your wits to arrange liaisons with your ex to get your husband’s attention and trick him into getting you pregnant is not impressive.

As for the ML, he is just a nasty human who appears to actually despise the FL (concur ML) but cannot help himself when it comes to her because she is just so hot?

Lastly, as for the romance, neither character appears to grow on the other character in any meaningful way, as tends to happen in the standard enemies to lovers plot. They just continue to hate each other, but still come to care for each other?

The whole book is vapid, and painful, and terribly unbelievable. Save yourself the credit and time.
