Story
Eighth-grader Drew Ellis is no stranger to the saying “You have to work twice as hard to be just as good”. His grandmother has reminded him his entire life. But what if he works 10 times as hard and still isn’t afforded the same opportunities that his privileged classmates at the Riverdale Academy Day School take for granted? To make matters worse, Drew begins to feel as if his good friend Liam might be one of those privileged kids.

Story
The Vanderbeekers have always lived in the brownstone on 141st Street. It's practically another member of the family. So when their reclusive, curmudgeonly landlord decides not to renew their lease, the five siblings have 11 days to do whatever it takes to stay in their beloved home and convince the dreaded Beiderman just how wonderful they are. And all is fair in love and war when it comes to keeping their home. A modern classic in the making reminiscent of the Penderwicks series.

Seventh grader Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life. But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade.
As he makes the daily trip from his Washington Heights apartment to the upscale Riverdale Academy Day School, Jordan soon finds himself torn between two worlds - and not really fitting into either one. Can Jordan learn to navigate his new school culture while keeping his neighborhood friends and staying true to himself?

Author needs to grow up
The good: Fun, lightweight listen, relatable.
The bad: Hypocrisy never addressed. Story feels like the author has some issues he never got over. Kids might walk away feeling that emotionally charged confrontation is the encouraged path.

Critical Race Theory at its finest!
This book was purchased as an option for one of my daughter's pre-approved booklist from school. It sounded like a fun and easy read from the sample given. So she picked this book. Very quickly we discovered that the book was designed to paint ALL white people as racist and bad simply because they are white. Sadly it made my daughter feel like she was guilty of racism just because of the color of her skin. 😡😡😡 We informed the teacher. And the book was removed from the reading list.
*I wish I could give this book a ZERO STAR RATING.

hard to follow along
I was reading this book while listening to it on audible and I have to say the audible story is a little different then the actual book so it ends up being hard to follow along. Still a good book though! Would recommend definitely.

I remember when
I loved this story so much I definitely could relate to the story because I went too boarding school. It brought back such memories ,I'm in my sixties and I enjoyed this book so much, of course I brought the book for my grandson who will start middle school in September. This book is a great read and even better audiobook.
Thank you Jerry Craft for memory lane❤
