Publisher's Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Sandra Brown returns with a fast-paced, emotional thriller where the lives of a young mother and a high-rolling consultant collide under devastating circumstances—culminating in a desperate manhunt that will change their futures forever.

At a Texas county fair, amidst carousels and a bustling midway, children’s book author Elle Portman is enjoying a rare night out with her favorite cowboy: her two-year-old son, Charlie. But just as they’re about to head home, the unthinkable happens: a shooter opens fire into the crowd, causing widespread panic to erupt all around them.

Also caught in the melee was corporate consultant Calder Hudson. Arrogant, self-centered, and high off his latest career win, he’s frustrated and confused when he wakes up in the hospital after undergoing emergency surgery on his arm. The doctor tells him that he was lucky—that as far as gunshot wounds go, he pulled through remarkably well. Others weren’t so lucky, which instills in Calder a furious determination to get justice . . . a goal shared by Elle.

Their chance encounter at the police station leads to a surprising and inexplicable gravitation to one another, but even as the attraction grows, Elle and Calder can’t help but wonder if the unimaginable tragedy that brought them together is too painful and too complicated to sustain—especially while the shooter remains at large.

Good read

I enjoyed this book as I have all of Sandra Brown’s books. It was a sensitive, topical story.

Hope you like a lot of sex

I wish that I hadn't wasted a credit on this book. I was looking for a fast paced murder mystery story. Well, the story was an excuse to have a lot of sex with a basic stranger. If you like that kind of thing....he growled into her neck. Yuck! I would love to have that credit back!

Emotional

I'am not good expressing myself in words . After listening to the first few
chapters, I was crying and nearly stopped the audio.
I thought it might be a factual study on trauma and grief .
I did continue and it was Sandra Brown 's fiction with all
the twists and turns.Didn't guess the villain until it was revealed.
wished there was a real epilogue --like Elle was .pregnant.
The narrating was good. Overall I recommend the book.
I have read or listened to all her books except two. There is one I
would not listen to ever again .-it was too sad.

OMG. So much potential

“ I think about everybody involved. But thinking about everybody else doesn’t make my groin big and keep my right hand busy at night” Yes, that’s a quote from the book. Pretty interesting story, but literally written like an eighth grade boy was penning his first story. I think the word “lustfully” with used eight times.

Just okay

The story was okay. It kept my attention until the end, but wasn’t anything mind blowing or memorable.
Parts of the plot were far fetched. The concept was a really good one, and so much more could have been gleaned from it. But it in the end, it fell short and left me disappointed. The narration was awful and made all females sound like confused bumpkins.

An Excellent Moving Novel

Part mystery, part romance, part horrific commentary on the mass shooting experience way to common in our country, this novel insightfully takes us through what happens when such tragedy happens. It's emotional, not gorey, accurate, not melodramatic, and worth your time. It's very worthwhile. I read hundreds of books a year. This is a five star 🌟

Very moving story.

Sandra Brown took an extremely emotional subject and made it understandable to a point to let readers know you can survive even the most horrific tragedy with the help of others.

NAUSEATING MOVE

The story started out well at a crowded community fair but couldn’t sustain its energy after a few chapters. Stilted characters and a so-so narrator made it hard to care about anyone in the novel. I stopped listening for good to the audiobook when protagonist Calder Hudson, a “high-rolling consultant”, became sexually attracted to and made a nauseating move on a mother whose toddler son had been murdered just days before (that’s romance?!).

Big time Disappointing

I eagerly awaited this new Sandra Brown book but was stunned at how boring it was and predictable. I hate I used my audible credit. Also, I’m so embarrassed that I told a friend, who has never read Sandra Brown, to be sure and read . I learned a lesson —never recommend a book by an author you like until you read it .

Sandra is back!

I was disappointed in the last book, but this one was pretty great. Kyf Brewer is not my favorite narrator (his women's voices are awful), but he did a mostly good job with this.
