Story
Cleary, North Carolina, is a sleepy mountain town, the kind of place where criminal activity is usually limited to parking violations. Not so, lately. Four women have disappeared from Cleary over the past two years. And there's always a blue ribbon left near the spot where each of the women was last seen. There are no bodies, no other clues, and no suspicion as to who their abductor might be. And now, another woman has disappeared without a trace.

Story
Bellamy Lyston was only 12 years old when her older sister Susan was killed on a stormy Memorial Day. Bellamy's fear of storms is a legacy of the tornado that destroyed the crime scene along with her memory of what really happened during the day's most devastating moments. Now, 18 years later, Bellamy has written a sensational, best-selling novel based on Susan's murder. Because the book was inspired by the tragic event that still pains her family, she published it under a pseudonym to protect them from unwanted publicity. But an opportunistic reporter for a tabloid newspaper discovers that the book is based on fact....

Story
Twenty years ago in the dead of night, four seemingly random individuals pulled the ultimate heist and almost walked away with half a million dollars. But by daybreak, their plan had been shot to hell. One of them was in the hospital. One was in jail. One was dead. And one got away with it. Arden Maxwell, the daughter of the man who disappeared all those years ago - presumably with the money, after murdering his accomplice - has never reconciled with her father's abandonment of her and her sister.

Publisher's Summary
Number-one New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Sandra Brown jolts the listener from the first minute of this heart-pounding story of corruption, treachery, and ceaseless deception...where nothing is what it seems and every truth brought to light exposes a darker lie.
When Jordie Bennet and Shaw Kinnard lock eyes across a disreputable backwater bar, something definitely sparks. Shaw gives off a dangerous vibe that makes men wary and inspires women to sit up and take notice. None feel that undercurrent more strongly than savvy businesswoman Jordie, who doesn't belong in a seedy dive on the banks of a bayou. But here she is...and Shaw Kinnard is here to kill her.
As Shaw and his partner take aim, Jordie is certain her time has come. But Shaw has other plans and abducts Jordie, hoping to get his hands on the $30 million her brother has stolen and, presumably, hidden. However, Shaw is not the only one looking for the fortune. Her brother's ruthless boss and the FBI are after it as well. Now on the run from the feds and a notorious criminal, Jordie and Shaw must rely on their wits - and each other - to stay alive.
Miles away from civilization and surrounded by swampland, the two play each other against their common enemies. Jordie's only chance of survival is to outwit Shaw, but it soon becomes clear to Shaw that Jordie isn't entirely trustworthy, either. Was she in on her brother's scam, or is she an innocent pawn in a deadly vendetta? And just how valuable is her life to Shaw, her remorseless and manipulative captor? Burning for answers - and for each other - this unlikely pair ultimately make a desperate move that could be their last.
With nonstop plot twists and the tantalizing sexual tension that has made Sandra Brown one of the world's best-loved authors, Sting will keep listeners on the edges of their seats until the final minutes.

Good, but long
I enjoyed Friction and mean streak better. I didn't think the chemistry was developed well. The story was good, with good twists... But it took a long time to get there. There were times I thought it went on.
The narrator has a great voice for a gruff manly man. But fir the women, wish he didn't make the female character sound winey. She needed to be a little more snotty instead of weak.

Children and fireplaces do not mix well!!
I like this book and thought it moved along at a good pace. There really weren't any lulls nor did it get draggy so I would say that makes for good listening!
There was some predictably in the story however in the end that was removed because I never saw it coming. This book has the kind of climax that makes you sit back and just shake your head because the way this was written there is no way to even make a guess.
**SPOILER **Initially I found the story to be a little transparent and some scenes kind of silly. Woman is kidnapped and threatened with death if someone doesn't pay up but is having sexual fantasies about kidnapper! Who does this? Then kidnapper is injured and hospitalized and he is fantasizing about the woman and checks to make sure everything is in working order just in case the opportunity arises (no pun intended!). Really? While handcuffed to a hospital bed and IVs and pain meds and this is what he thinking about? Sorry, I get hung up on the little things.
Anyway it all comes down to a sisters guilt. As young children her and her brother got into a fight right next to an open fireplace and his pajamas went up in flames scarring him for life. She feels guilty and he takes full advantage.
I thought this was a very good book otherwise and purchased it on sale for $4.95. If you read this review within the next few days (written 9/15/17) I would Recommend purchasing it for that price, however it is a good book and would be worth a credit.

Best book I've read this year. Brown's skill at weaving a tantalizing mystery spiced with unrelenting sexual tension is unmatched. Steven Lang's narration is spot on. Sigh. I'm going back to the start and listen to it again.

Rapists are not sexy
Any additional comments?
It is profoundly disturbing to me that a female author would play into the "rape culture" mentality that it is somehow sexy and tantalizing for a man to assault, kidnap, rape, over-power, control, threaten, or otherwise abuse a women. We are supposed to accept that a woman who is being threatened with rape and murder is somehow attracted to her captor and tormentor. Big strong man so sexy. It's not sexy. When a man threatens to kill you or rape you it is terrifying and no...not seductive. No woman would be thinking about his lips or his big sexy muscles or his "mesmerizing stare." Rapists and otherwise abusive men are not sexy. That's my last Sandra Brown book.

Characters, dialogue, and narration all bad
Any additional comments?
I only got about 3hrs into it but I could tell I already hated the book. Plus, I hate when male narrators try to read a woman's character. Now he wasn't as bad as other male narrators I've come across but annoying enough. He made her sound like an airhead and kept going in and out of a southern accent (what's that about). And then Shaw, he made sound like the guy smoked 10 packs a day... not sexy dude. As for the dialogue, it was cheesy and made both characters sound like they had only a fifth grade education. And the story, well what I heard in the 3hrs was ridiculous. Shaw's character kidnaps Jordie won't say anything to her in the car, stone cold silent. She was asking why he kidnapped her and what he was going to do with her...nothing. But then as soon as they stop to pee he basically won't shut up. He goes on blabbing about exactly what he did to her when he knocked her out, who his name is, blah blah blah. Really people!!! This book is definitely not Sandra's best. I quit!

longtime fan questioning explicit scenes
I've been a long time fan of Sandra Brown. Enjoy the format of her stories. I enjoyed the storyline but was uncomfortable with the explicit language in the sex scene(s). am I crazy or were the sex scenes in this novel more explicitly described than in any previous book by Sandra Brown? maybe it's because I'm listening to her stories now rather than reading the novels? I'm interested to hear if others feel the same way or if others think I'm crazy.
