Publisher's Summary

Number one New York Times best-selling author Sandra Brown combines heart-stopping suspense and forbidden passion in this psychological thriller about an FBI agent's hunt for a ruthless conman turned serial killer.

Sure to keep listeners on the edges of their seats, this new novel will feature Brown's signature combination of steamy romance and jaw-dropping plot twists.

FBI agent Drex Easton is relentlessly driven by a single goal: to outmaneuver the con man once known as Weston Graham. Over the past 30 years, Weston has assumed many names and countless disguises, enabling him to lure eight wealthy women out of their fortunes before they disappeared without a trace, their families left without answers and the authorities without clues. The only common trait among the victims: a new man in their life who also vanished, leaving behind no evidence of his existence...except for one signature custom.

Drex is convinced that these women have been murdered and that the man he knows as Weston Graham is the sociopath responsible. But each time Drex gets close to catching him, Weston trades one persona for another and disappears again. Now, for the first time in their long game of cat and mouse, Drex has a suspect in sight.

Attractive and charming, Jasper Ford is recently married to a successful businesswoman many years his junior, Talia Shafer. Drex insinuates himself into their lives, posing as a new neighbor and setting up surveillance on their house. The closer he gets to the couple, the more convinced he becomes that Jasper is the clever, merciless predator he's sought - and that his own attraction to Talia threatens to compromise his purpose and integrity.

This is Drex's one chance to outfox his cunning nemesis before he murders again and eludes justice forever. But first he must determine if the desirable Talia is a heartless accomplice...or the next victim.

What the critics say

"Narrator Victor Slezak maneuvers listeners through the cat-and-mouse game being played by FBI agent Drex Easton and the serial killer who murdered his mother.... Slezak's calm and cool voice keeps the listener's rapt attention whether he's describing romantic moments or diving into the complicated mind of a killer on a spree." (AudioFile)

kind of disappointing

I just found it very predictable and a little eye rolling. I feel bad cause this is one of my favorite authors. I found it more of a love story and less of a mystery

Totally unrealistic, somewhat nauseating.

Totally unrealistic. The two main characters are of such low-intelligence they shouldn't even exist. I was hoping something good would happen at the end. It did not.

Narration is absolutely horrible...

I would definitely pass on this one, the story may be good, however, the narration is absolutely horrible, could only listen to a few minutes of this one before I knew that it was not for me. The narrator is extremely monotone and also has a very predominant lisp which is very distracting to story. I will definitely be returning this one to audible for a refund.

Enjoyable, Intense and funny.

I enjoyed this story, as I do almost all of Sandra Brown's books. I loved the characters, the story
line and the humour. The ending had me fooled. Something that doesn't happen often.

Horrible Reader

I thought the 'S" ... horrible lisping kind of speech impediment wouldn't be too off-putting, but by the end of the story, it was more than too much!

It wasn't just off-putting, it detracted greatly from the credibility of the book itself.

I'll never buy a book again by this reader and will definitely pursue a refund for the agony this otherwise good book cost.

Annual Great Ms Brown

I have an annual automatic download on Ms Browns new novels for many years now especially when Victor is the narrator. This year does not disappoint. The publisher summary is spot on so no need to add to it. However, l do use the new 1.25x speed on all mysteries to match the action.
If you are a fan of Ms Browns works and enjoyed Smash Cut with elements of White Hot my fave and Play Dirty, then this book is for you.
If you are new to Ms Browns work, she has her trademark twist ending that pulls all the clues and characters together.
Since Ms Brown started her writing career with core romance novels, she still has the ability to make her hero sizzle and Victor brings it home.
Do not miss Mean Streak narrated by the great Jonathan Davis. It is in the top five of my faves along with Smoke Screen and Lethal.
Were my comments of help?

Narrator was painful

The narrator destroyed the book. He's done such a great job previously, but it was difficult to understand half of what he slurred.

If only.

Would have enjoyed this book so much more but the narrator's voice somewhat ruined it.

gave it up early on

there is no distinction whatsoever between character voices. I listened until it was so muddled as to who was who that I gave it up

Awful narrator

I love Sandra Brown novels, but I could not get into this story, due to the narrator. His voice and tone irritated me to no end. I returned this audiobook. First time ever in all my years with Audible.

Awful Narrator!

I LOVE anything by Sandra Brown. This story is great but you have to get past the narrator! His accents are HORRIBLE! He destroys the love scene! The terrible narrator did not allow me to fully engage in to the story...wish I would have read it...

Awful

Awful narration, awful characters, awful story. I’m irritated at myself for wasting so much time on this mess. Why would any woman find Drex a desirable partner? He is a creep, disrespectful and harassing. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.

Couldn’t get past first chapter

There was something in the narrator’s tone and speech pattern that made me cringe. I had to return this book rather than suffer through. Can’t review the story because I couldn’t listen.

Terrible Narration

I can't believe this is read by Victor Slezak. What happened to him? It was painful to listen to. The story had potential but ended up disappointing and like several of SB's other books.

Highly Recommend

This book has an arresting storyline and plot. The characters are fleshed out and interesting and believable. I did not enjoy Mr.Slezak's narration as well as other books he has narrated. It is like he could not differentiate the characters very well with voice variations. I did get used to it though and still enjoyed the book immensely! Highly recommend this book and eagerly anticipate Ms. Brown's next novel.
