Story
Rye Mallett, a fearless "freight dog" pilot charged with flying cargo to far-flung locations, is often rough-spoken and all business, but soft on regulations when they get in the way of meeting a deadline. But he does have a rock-solid reputation: He will fly in the foulest weather, day or night, and deliver the goods safely to their destination. So when Rye is asked to fly into a completely fogbound northern Georgia town and deliver a mysterious black box to a Dr. Lambert, he doesn't ask questions.

Publisher's Summary
Number one New York Times best-selling author Sandra Brown combines heart-stopping suspense and forbidden passion in this psychological thriller about an FBI agent's hunt for a ruthless conman turned serial killer.
Sure to keep listeners on the edges of their seats, this new novel will feature Brown's signature combination of steamy romance and jaw-dropping plot twists.
FBI agent Drex Easton is relentlessly driven by a single goal: to outmaneuver the con man once known as Weston Graham. Over the past 30 years, Weston has assumed many names and countless disguises, enabling him to lure eight wealthy women out of their fortunes before they disappeared without a trace, their families left without answers and the authorities without clues. The only common trait among the victims: a new man in their life who also vanished, leaving behind no evidence of his existence...except for one signature custom.
Drex is convinced that these women have been murdered and that the man he knows as Weston Graham is the sociopath responsible. But each time Drex gets close to catching him, Weston trades one persona for another and disappears again. Now, for the first time in their long game of cat and mouse, Drex has a suspect in sight.
Attractive and charming, Jasper Ford is recently married to a successful businesswoman many years his junior, Talia Shafer. Drex insinuates himself into their lives, posing as a new neighbor and setting up surveillance on their house. The closer he gets to the couple, the more convinced he becomes that Jasper is the clever, merciless predator he's sought - and that his own attraction to Talia threatens to compromise his purpose and integrity.
This is Drex's one chance to outfox his cunning nemesis before he murders again and eludes justice forever. But first he must determine if the desirable Talia is a heartless accomplice...or the next victim.
What the critics say
"One of the best thriller writers around, period." (Providence Journal)
"Brown deserves her own genre." (Dallas Morning News)
"A masterful storyteller." (USA Today)

Narration is absolutely horrible...
I would definitely pass on this one, the story may be good, however, the narration is absolutely horrible, could only listen to a few minutes of this one before I knew that it was not for me. The narrator is extremely monotone and also has a very predominant lisp which is very distracting to story. I will definitely be returning this one to audible for a refund.

Horrible Reader
I thought the 'S" ... horrible lisping kind of speech impediment wouldn't be too off-putting, but by the end of the story, it was more than too much! It wasn't just off-putting, it detracted greatly from the credibility of the book itself. I'll never buy a book again by this reader and will definitely pursue a refund for the agony this otherwise good book cost.

Annual Great Ms Brown
I have an annual automatic download on Ms Browns new novels for many years now especially when Victor is the narrator. This year does not disappoint. The publisher summary is spot on so no need to add to it. However, l do use the new 1.25x speed on all mysteries to match the action. If you are a fan of Ms Browns works and enjoyed Smash Cut with elements of White Hot my fave and Play Dirty, then this book is for you. If you are new to Ms Browns work, she has her trademark twist ending that pulls all the clues and characters together. Since Ms Brown started her writing career with core romance novels, she still has the ability to make her hero sizzle and Victor brings it home. Do not miss Mean Streak narrated by the great Jonathan Davis. It is in the top five of my faves along with Smoke Screen and Lethal. Were my comments of help?

Highly Recommend
This book has an arresting storyline and plot. The characters are fleshed out and interesting and believable. I did not enjoy Mr.Slezak's narration as well as other books he has narrated. It is like he could not differentiate the characters very well with voice variations. I did get used to it though and still enjoyed the book immensely! Highly recommend this book and eagerly anticipate Ms. Brown's next novel.

Victor Slezak sounds more like Willie Nelson
I love Sandra Brown but this one was too much of a stretch. The plot didn't make a lot of sense...I found myself groaning in spots. Victor Slezak's voice does not conjure up "tall, dark and handsome" rather an over-the-hill Willie Nelson. And, I had trouble differentiating between one character and the other. In 2001 Sandra Brown wrote The Alibi narrated by Dennis Redfield. If you haven't listened to it, I highly recommend it. Dennis Redfield does the best characters I've ever heard. You always know who is speaking and his women in the bedroom are second to none. I never understood why Victor Slezak got the nod. I will definitely listen to the next Sandra Brown and hope for the best!
