Paul s'y livre à un vibrant plaidoyer en faveur d'un esclave du nom d'Onésime, "propriété" d'un de ses amis : Philémon, un membre de l'Eglise de Colosses. Cet esclave a probablement volé son maître et s'est enfui. Parvenu à Rome, il a rencontré l'apôtre. C'est là qu'il a accepté l'Evangile et est venu à la foi en Christ (10). Paul écrit donc à son ami pour réintroduire Onésime auprès de lui, non plus comme un esclave mais comme un frère (11, 12, 16). Avec beaucoup de tact, il lui demande d'accueillir son frère et de lui pardonner (14-15, 20). Les barrières du passé et celles qu'ont érigées entre eux le vol et la désertion d'Onésime ne peuvent plus subsister : ils sont désormais un en Christ.
