I really disliked this book.

The book is labeled as a cultivation novel. The book talks about secondary characters that are into cultivation. But the main character has refused the option to cultivate. The cultivation is also not described beyond saying the people who do it have ranks and cultivate by "bending their echos". So if your looking for a cultivation novel, this book is not it. Maybe future books will have it, but ugh not this one. I was really looking forward to hearing the main character progress his powers and abilities.

The book was so tedious. The main character was a constant grumbling mess. There were secondary characters to add relief, but they just came off as poorly written. I'd just really cannot recommend this book. I don't know if the series gets better. But I'm not willing to spend more money to find out.

Great Book. Greater TV Show?

Someone already posted this before, but I'd like to reitterate.
The episodic way in which this story was told, each with a minor plotline derived from rising action, climax, and falling action, all leading to a final culmination of epic proportions really lends itself to being perfectly suited for a Netflix tv series.
It is a great book that came out of left field. Cooper is a true wordsmith that draws you in to his fantastical realm and makes you really feel the character's exhaustion for combat.
It reminded me a little of the Night Angel Trilogy, save for the character being older and wiser, where he seeks redemption for a terrible past. Stories like this always draw me in. Cannot wait for book2!

Fun with Samurai John Wick doing Side Quests

I had so much fun with this Audible. I loved listening to the adventure of tired assassin Danzen helping out the villagers while bracing for his shady past to finally catch up with him. I cant wait for the next book. The Narrator was awesome I hope he does the entire series.

kinda dumb

our hero has an affliction that makes his flying super sharp sword the most incompatible weapon. along with other not making sense parts i don't expect a fantasy book to be realistic by any means. I just like the plot and details to sorta fit if you squint your eyes a bit sorta. returned for credit!

A Netflix Series In a Book

This book was awesome! Due to its episodic telling, i felt like i was hearing a series that i could stop and pick back up on whenever. The story is fantastic and so far one of my favorites now. Characters are unique and memorable, while the narration is clear and distinctly well done. All in all it was a great use of a credit and i look forward for the books to come.

Poorly written, juvenile trash. Waste of my money

He just wanted to write poorly structured action sequences with no idea how to string them together. His writing style is childish and derivative. I find it difficult to believe someone chose to put money into this ridiculous story's publication.

This have nothing to do with LitRpg

I have made it trough.
Story is ... well it difficult to say if there is a story. MC quit one organization and the he lived happy life far away doing some tasks from time to time.
Not going for next one int the series.
If possible I'm going to return it.

Narrator was too much...

I dont know if the book was good or not. but hated the narrator. He was fine at prose, but his voices were cringeworthy. Quit within an hour

Unique premise, but the wrong execution

Pilgrim has a nice idea behind it. What happens when a powerful warrior decides to leave a life of violence behind and rebuild a more normal life from nothing?

In the beginning, this series feels a lot like Stardew Valley, with Pilgrim meeting the townsfolk, getting a place to stay, working on a new home, and documenting the local wildlife. Notably, there's still a lot of violence, with our assassin MC killing most of the wildlife he documents, but that's just part of the fun. It's very episodic, with each Yokai getting their own small story. I even love Pilgrim's stoic personality.

But Pilgrim's life is absolutely unbelievable. What kind of assassin is he supposed to be when he's built like Andre the giant and outright admits he hates sneaking up on his targets? His curse of summoning demons when he bleeds is the dumbest plot device I think I've ever seen, doubly so when his weapon of choice is a throwing sword that flies back at him. We're expected to believe that this assassin goes years without getting cut once, even during intensive training while learning to catch a flying sword.

Honestly the first book isn't the best, and I'd suggest the author gets a stricter editor, but I'd still recommend it to people who want a bit of something different from their progression fantasies, and they're willing to take things at a slower pace.

Unfortunately, you then have the rest of the series. I have the first three books in the Pilgrim series, and I'd recommend against purchasing any more than the first book. If you're considering whether Pilgrim is your next binge series, I'd say there are other things more worth your money.

During the second book, the author is very eager to leave behind the sleepy village life, despite how important it was all throughout the first book. Then the plot completely jumps the shark toward the end of the second book, culminating in huge revelations and a climactic battle between good and evil where all of Pilgrim's friends need to fight against enemies new and old . . .

Then at the beginning of the third book, Pilgrim comments about how he should get a window installed in his bedroom. I'm sorry, what? Look, during the first book it would have made sense to improve Pilgrim's home so incrementally, but he hardly spends any time there and nothing special comes of it.

When Pilgrim's problems are creating a new life for himself out of a sleepy village and an old temple, I get invested on a smaller scale, but when you pull out a climactic battle between the forces of good and evil, you can't exactly go back. Episodic fights with unrelated Yokai begin to feel meaningless because they no longer contribute to the overarching narrative, because the overarching narrative is no longer about Pilgrim finding his place in this world. What does helping villagers matter when you just met the lord of the underworld?

The window from earlier could have been cut out entirely and nothing would have changed. Actually, the book would have been improved, as different parts of the book could have flowed together more smoothly without the pointless interruption. It's just a vestigial element from the previous tone.

"Why does this window matter?" You might ask. "It hardly takes up a minute of the book's runtime." You might add.

It's important because it illustrates two things. The author is sloppy, and the author doesn't understand what he wants, and you can tell both of those things from everything Harmon Cooper writes, but it's no more epitomized than by a bedroom window.
