Publisher's Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Experience the book that started the Quiet Movement and revolutionized how the world sees introverts—and how introverts see themselves—by offering validation, inclusion, and inspiration

“Superbly researched, deeply insightful, and a fascinating read,
Quiet is an indispensable resource for anyone who wants to understand the gifts of the introverted half of the population.”—Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR—
People, O: The Oprah Magazine, Christian Science Monitor, Inc., Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts—from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Passionately argued, impeccably researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves.

What the critics say

2013, Carnegie Medal, Long-listed

2012, Goodreads.com Readers Choice Award for Best Debut Author and Best Nonfiction Book of the Year, Winner

“As an introvert often called upon to behave like an extrovert, I found the information in this book revealing and helpful. Drawing on neuroscientific research and many case reports, Susan Cain explains the advantages and potentials of introversion and of being quiet in a noisy world.” (Andrew Weil, author of Healthy Aging and Spontaneous Happiness)

“Susan Cain has done a superb job of sifting through decades of complex research on introversion, extroversion, and sensitivity—this book will be a boon for the many highly sensitive people who are also introverts.” (Elaine Aron, author of The Highly Sensitive Person)

I’ve listened to this 4 times already

I have always found that it’s in my third or fourth or fifth reading or listening of a book where I get the best information. Susan Cain has written a compelling story with many anecdotes that are very enjoyable to listen to.

Validating and insightful.

I enjoyed the narration style of the reader. It sounded human instead of robotic like other books. She grasped the importance of the topic, and read the book as if she was conversing with the audience, which made it pleasant to listen.

Great book to help better understand yourself

This book is eye-opening to an introvert like me. I learned a lot about myself, mostly why I am the way I am and what I need to take care of myself. I loved it! #Audible1

A must read/listen for all introverts!

This was the book I needed to listen to as an introvert. To the other introverts out there, you got this! Never give up! No matter what happens.

Audible version not recommended

I love this book. I purchased the Audible version to listen to it again. The narrator does not seem to be aware of the fact that this book is most frequently read by introverts, an irony in itself. She reads too fast, and I had to bring down the speed which makes it sound a little awkward.

Great book

Helped me to realize I was trying to hard to be an extrovert when in reality I should nourish my introvert behaviors and being aware of how could I use this behaviors to communicate better what I have in my mind.

Sometimes the answer to a problem is not to solve it but to stop looking it as a problem.

Worth The Read

Interesting audiobook with quite a few important lessons I will take with me. That said, I did find it challenging to finish as I found the end a bit drawn out and not as impactful as the first two-thirds of the book. And the interest in the narrator waned over time.

I cant stop talking about this book!

I had to read a few chapter of this book for a university class and I couldn’t put it down! I think I finished it in a day and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It makes me feel empowered as an introvert myself and gives me hope.

Thank you Susan 💕

Worth reading over and over again!

As an introvert, this book really resonated with me. It provided really useful tools on how to navigate in a world of extroverts and use your introversion as a superpower! Well written and well performed! Even if you're not an introvert yourself, you may have a loved one who is an introvert and this book teaches you how to better understand us. This one is a keeper for sure!
