Publisher's Summary

From critically acclaimed author Alice Oseman comes a smartly crafted contemporary YA novel, perfect for fans who love Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl. This is an utterly captivating and authentic teen novel from the author of Solitaire, which VOYA said “could put her among the great young adult fiction authors.”

Frances Janvier spends most of her time studying.

Everyone knows Aled Last as that quiet boy who gets straight As.

You probably think that they are going to fall in love or something. Since he is a boy and she is a girl.

They don’t. They make a podcast.

In a world determined to shut them up, knock them down, and set them on a cookie cutter life path, Frances and Aled struggle to find their voices over the course of one life-changing year. Will they have the courage to show everyone who they really are? Or will they be met with radio silence?

Overhyped

You know when you push through a book because EVERYONE says they love it and then it’s just...not...that..good. Yeah? Well that was this for me. I really hard a hard time listening to this, I found it really cringe and also though I definitely relate to the struggle every teen has experienced of feeling lost/directionless...it was so hard for me to care about the characters. Idk. Not it for me.

I guess it's not for me

Almost reached the end but got tired of it, feels very slow and repetitive. It has some good points. Maybe it's for younger people. Maybe it's the audio format that didn't work for me, cause it has lots of online chat logs back and forth and you have to listen to each hour and name of each message. The moms felt very 'one note'. The 'mystery' was kinda obvious... well, not bad, not bad

Emotional To Say The Least

I’ve been meaning to read Radio Silence for a couple months now and I’m glad I waited to pick it up on audiobook. Radio Silence had me sobbing on my drive home today as the struggles of Frances and Aled hit so close to home. I was so happy that it wasn’t a love story and represented so many different communities.

Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it. It was just ok.

First off, I want to say that I’m big on checking out reviews for books after I read them and I could only find 1 that agreed with me. So, clearly my opinion is not a very popular one. I found a few that seemed to agree with some opinions I had, but still rated it a 4 out of 5 because of how relatable it was for them. I did not find this relatable, and not because I haven’t gone through the things the characters deal with because I have. I simply felt no attachment to it at all, it wasn’t a great book, It was just ok. So, I will not rate this higher than a 3 and I feel like I’m being generous with a 3. I went into this blind because of the amazing reviews it had received and felt that I couldn’t be disappointed. Maybe my expectations were too high, because it never grabbed me and I found myself taking many breaks from it. In fact, the only time I was unable to stop listening was towards the end because I honestly just wanted to get it over with so I start something else. I even caught myself checking the time to see if it was almost over. The writing was a bit sloppy, I didn’t care for the main character Frances and it was way longer than it should have been. I just really did not enjoy this book. I think if it was a 90 minute movie I would’ve enjoyed it more, but instead I spent over 500 minutes wondering what all the hype was about. If you’re looking for an ice breaker read and don’t want to put too much thought into something than throw on this audio book and check out the decent story, but in my opinion if you’re looking for something captivating then look somewhere else because you will not find that here.

British teen drama within pop social networks and fandom

It was worth a sale price listen, a little long, but entertaining. Topics of sexuality, love, and self worth among some British teens just trying to figure it all out. Kind of like frozen the love is deeper than just mates. Very fandom! Unique.

This book was so great, so real and true to life!

I loved this book immensely and related to many parts of it - podcast related stuff as someone who has created a couple of podcasts myself, people ghosting others, the portrayal of an abusive mother, being worried someone you care for may be acting on suicidal thoughts, being good in school but having fandom interests in private, etc. I loved all the acceptance of various queer identities and the demisexuality was a big part of why I read it (I'm interested in reading a lot of things with a variety of ace and aro representation). The focus on friendship and insignificance of romance throughout the book was so refreshing, and the main friendship felt a lot like a queerplatonic partnership to me. the book was wonderful and I'd highly recommend it :)

I cried

This book reminded me why ya contemporary is my favorite genre. It was raw, vulnerable, and sweet in the best of ways.

Oh so good!

This book has become without a doubt a new favorite of mine. A captivating and addictive novel that makes it so hard to put this book down. From chapter one, I was immersed so deeply in the narrative and got immediately lost in its universe and its characters. I strongly recommend the audiobook for this one, Aysha Kala's performance is remarkable.
