Pretty good debut

I need to get this out of the way, first: for a female writer, she can't write a sympathetic female character to save her life and woow, it got old fast. Maybe I'm being unduly harsh? I don't know. I just found her female characters who had more than a few lines to be incredibly grating. The main character's wife was comically awful, and the other woman who got a fair bit of plot, Barbara, was kind of... pathetic? It was frustrating. Her male characters were a little more well rounded, and Paolo was actually pretty sympathetic. You definitely felt for him by the end of the book and hoped that he could sort his personal issues out.
The writing was pretty solid, and the story was engaging. There was a bit of a twist at the end that worked fairly well.
Overall, an enjoyable listen. I'm starting book 2 now.
(The only other thing is that it seems like the author wears her beliefs and values on her sleeve. Just an FYI.)
