About this listen

The Ghosts of the Tanith First-and-Only have been away from the front line for too long. Listless and hungry for action, they are offered a mission that perfectly suits their talents.

The objective: the mysterious Salvation's Reach, a remote and impenetrable stronghold concealing secrets that could change the course of the Sabbat Worlds campaign. But the proposed raid is so hazardous, it's regarded as a suicide mission, and the Ghosts may have been in reserve for so long they've lost their edge. Haunted by spectres from the past and stalked by the Archenemy, Colonel-Commissar Gaunt and his Ghosts embark upon what could be their finest hour...or their final mission.

Look - of course nobody expects a new narrator to perfectly mirror the previous one in their performance but it appears that McPherson made no effort to listen to and imitate the previous TWELVE books in the series. The voices here are nearly unlistenable. This isn't Harry Potter. Why does Larkin sound like a magical elf? Why is every characters spoken dialogue narrated as if they are reading a script with one word on each page? These characters are extremely battle hardened warriors who have been to hell and back countless times.

Skip this one. Thank God this guy only did one of these. Sorry!

Tough transition to a new narrator but this is bad

this narrator really did Mad Larkin dirty, Madd him sound like a shrill old woman, not the gruff deadeye sniper we all love. it's so bad I almost got a physical copy of the book. all the other voices are fine though, and the scottish/Irish accent fits the tannith lads, still a shame about that voice acting on Larks, Mert too

Great book, questionable narrator choice.

It’s a story up to Dan Abnett’s high standards, but James McPherson’s work on this ranged from OK to atrocious. In this book, Larkin sounds like a Monty Python character, names aren’t pronounced properly, and the three main accents that make up the 1st are all over the place. I lasted 2 hours and had to return it. I opted to have iOS accessibility text to speech reader narrate the ebook version instead.

Where TF is Toby Longworth?

good story. The voice work is brutal. The voice actor is fine enough when he's not actually voicing the characters but all you have to do is listen to his take on Larkin once and you want to shut off audible. I've read the book the story is good but I can't finish the audio book.

Loved the story and writing. Hard transition from the narrator from early books that I enjoyed so much.
