Publisher's Summary

When the body of a fast-living young stockbroker is found in a shallow grave, suspicion first falls on a cuckolded policeman. Lieutenant Joe Gunther investigates the increasingly bizarre details of the crime, but he's too far behind events to prevent a second murder. Indeed, whoever is responsible always seems to be a few steps ahead, as if there's a leak in the police force. Sweltering August heat does nothing to calm the increasingly agitated town selectmen, who demand results.

It’s good entertainment

Although I might stop the series if the next book is another setup. I understand it makes for a longer story, but it kind of bothered me.
I do love the narrator.

No-Nonsense Workmanlike Mystery

Archer Mayor really plays to his strengths in this effort: intensively-researched impeccably accurate Crime Investigation (including legally-mandated Search & Seizure requirements and Chain Of Evidence documentation procedures).

Mayor still puts Detective 'Joe Gunther' into incredibly implausible situations (there is literally zero chance that a gumshoe cop would be invited to scrub in to a trauma surgery, for example) - and the interviews are often plagued with stilted dialogue & inane comments - but the description of a case that starts with the discovery of a severed hand in a shallow grave - and proceeds organically - is spot-on. In this entry to the Gunther series, Mayor admirably sticks to the nuts & bolts of crime-solving: canvassing/interviewing, gathering evidence, forensics, and intuitive reasoning with a dash of psychology.
[Don't worry.. there is also plenty of well-choreographed action to satisfy the adrenaline-junkies].
Mayor's disappointingly typical klunky relationship expositions among witnesses & suspects (and Joe's private life) take a back seat to the crime in this one - and the result is praiseworthy.

Reader Tom Taylorson is excellent in this recording, too.. returning to his characteristic peerless voice-acting (he was off in Book Two) and pairing it with commendable diction, timbre, cadence, and tone. This book sounds like it's being read by a full cast - an incredible performance from Mr. Taylorson.

Altogether, 'Scent Of Evil' is one of the better efforts in the 'Joe Gunther' Mystery-Thriller series. The book merits an impressive 9 stars out of 10. If you can get it as a 'Plus' option, do not hesitate - because it would rate a Credit for any fan of true-to-life procedurals.

[Incidentally: speaking as an MD, the scripting of a gunshot victim's treatment from First Aid at the scene to transit via EMS (with medical complications) to emergency thoracotomy to a frustrating death on the table is strikingly authentic]
