The story: The Deathwatch are the elite of the elite - small teams of Space Marines handpicked for special missions that require the utmost courage and cunning. Now recovered from the injuries sustained on his previous mission, Codicier Karras must lead Talon Squad in the hunt for a missing inquisitor. Their only clue is the name of an Imperial planet that has been taken over by the T’au. Is the missing inquisitor alive or dead? Worse still, has she gone rogue, jeopardising one of the Inquisition’s most secret projects?

Karras must lead his team against a whole planet of hostile T’au and survive the deadly internal politics of the Inquisition to succeed in his mission, code named Shadowbreaker.

Action, intrigue and excitement are seamlessly woven together by the master of high-octane science fiction, Steve Parker.

Surprise hit

I really enjoyed this book. Well written, good narration too. It was a long one but, but it kept my attention.

good overall

I liked it overall. Some intrigue and interesting characters, but the story dragged in places. Happy I listened to the audiobook vs reading.

Narrator lets story down

Lots of skips and sound breaks. Twice the narrator coughs midsentence then starts again. Most damning he often mispronounces words and reads obvious typos without catching them.

lots of words, not much said.

The premise and plot are excellent. Modern day parallels with jihadists and guerrilla warfare, awesome. The writing however is brutal.
Descriptive writing is great, but i dont need to know the colour of every characters socks and what their favorite snack is. i left for 20mins, came back and their was zero progress in the scene. The writer has great ideas, but he needs a good editor to tighten this up. Theirs not many Black Libraries I've struggled through, but this is one.

Just terrible.

Out of the 200+ blacklibrary books I've read/listened to this is top 3 on my 'worst' list.

Reads like a 14 year old's Call of Duty fanfic. I think this is amplified by the extremely over the top acting, full of Shatneresque pauses.

Add in a dose of sloppy editting (I can hear the actor reset himself at one point and have another go at a line... did no one listen to this before shipping?) and I can honestly say it's not worth listening too.

Glad this was my sign up freebie, so at least it cost me nothing.

Bland

Reads like a young adult novel. Instead of focusing on war and fun aspects of the Warhammer universe, you mostly read about how every minor character "feels" about the situation.
